Your Favorite Hard Rock or Metal Bands
Reading the topics in Other Artists and Groups, I was struck by the fact that all save one (Led Zeppelin) are all easy listening or pop acts. As for myself I have had a bit of an eclectic taste in music throughout my life. In my youth some of my favorite bands were hard rock and metal bands. I admit as I've aged I don't listen to alot of metal anymore but on the odd occasion I do. Anyone else like some harder edge music now, or in their youth?

Here's a few of mine:

1. Pink Floyd
2. Ted Nugent
3. Nazareth
4. AC/DC
5. Judas Priest
6. Queen
7. Van Halen
8. Guns N Roses
9. The Who
10. Cream

My favourite hardrocker is Zeltinger. I think you don´t know him, he is a german singer with different music styles.

LORDI is an international group that I like. Their two singles "Hard Rock Hallelujah" and "Who´s Your Daddy" sounded great!

I also have albums from Motörhead, KISS and AC/DC, but I would not call myself a heavy metal fan. I only hear this kind of music from time to time.

Guns N' Roses, definitely Guns N' Roses, although I some metalbands as well, but only a few. I have to admit I prefer their first songs and albums but I think most people with agree with that..
Bobbysbrother - 09.02.2007, 20:14

Oh my gosh, Guns & Roses....they remind me of me at 16, I was crazy for them when they first started.I thought Slash was terrific. Appetite For Destrtruction had many kicking classics (my favs My Michelle, Its so Easy), unbeatable....I also used to listen to some rather gross flashy glam metal at the time, thinking nowadays some things were reeeeally embarassing LOL (anything from Mötley Crüe, to Poison and Skid Raw, AAH!!)

But theres one hard rock band which is always great to have fun with:

AEROSMITH

And QUEEN (not only hard rock but any style they did with excellence) are above all...

But anyway, Ive always remained a son of the Brit Rock, rather then the American. The Clash were great!

Clearly, as indicated by my short list, I lean Brit myself.

Rock music was more or less invented in America in the 50's, springing from Blues and Jazz roots, but the rock we know today was more influenced by the British. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Cream, Deep Purple, and Pink Floyd redefined rock music in the late 60's and 70's. Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Judas Priest arguably invented Heavy Metal. The Sex Pistols and The Clash helping to usher in Punk.

Oh yes, as a child of the Eighties I practically worshipped hard rock and heavy metal for a number of years. My absolute favorite artists in that genre are:(in order)

1. Def Leppard
2. Guns 'N Roses
3. Great White
3. AC/DC
4. Metallica
5. Quiet Riot
6. Motley Crue
7. Warrant

Too True

I knew I wasn't crazy...a few years back I saw this "Heavy Metal" retrospective show on VH1 and they claimed it began on the Sunset Strip with bands like Motley Crue, Poison and Ratt...   !!!

I thought did, I miss something? Where was reference to the great bands of Metal?

The Heavy Birmingham chords of Tony IommI, Screetching Angst of Ozzy and Black Sabbath?

The Unearthly howl of Rob Halford and the dueling double guitars of Judas Priest (Not to mention the true beginnings of the Leather and Stud look of most metal fans...unknowing the true..."nature" of the clothing to Rob Halford.)

The Sexuality/Black Arts/ And the enigmatic Majesty of Plant, Page, Bonham and Jones.

What about the Canadians....Rush...you will never hear more sound and music from 3 people...Neal Peart recognised as an immortal among drummers...

Indeed it seemed to me the golden era of hard rock/heavy metal was in the early seventies and mid eighties...

All that Poison/Ratt/Queit Riot stuff should not even be considered Heavy Metal. Metal finally came back with Appetite For Destruction from Guns and Roses. That album was a gift from the metal gods.

Cronus, no judgement on your favorites, just my opinion.

Just thought most of those bands were more 'pop' rock than Heavy Metal.

Special Mention on my list of bands I enjoyed in that genre:

Iron Maiden, Scorpions, Van Halen (Roth and Early Hagar), Heart (Agreed their '70s stuff was fantastic), Aerosmith, AC/DC and dare I say....KISS? :D

Granted alot of their 80's music could be considered pop, but much of the early 70's songs were pretty hard rock. "We Will Rock You" and "Fat Bottomed Girls" were about as hard rock as it gets.

No offense taken, Xentusk, but if you really want to engage in that kind of discussion, then I'll have to tell it like it is. I included bands like Def Leppard and Warrant because the topic was "Hard Rock" and "Heavy Metal" bands, and I considered those to be what you'd call Hard Rock(at least in Def Leppard's early days they were). If you want to only discuss Heavy Metal specifically, then you'd have to throw an awful lot of bands off of that list. Back in the Eighties, Guns'N Roses were not considered true heavy metal, nor were AC/DC or Motley Crue.

The true Heavy Metal bands of that era, at least to the "purists" were not the bands that you'd ever hear played on the radio. Examples of authentic Heavy Metal include: Judas Priest, Slayer, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Motorhead and Metallica before the Black album. All others would have to fall in the "Hard Rock" category, or the pop rock category(Bon Jovi, for instance).

In my opinion, however, it doesn't matter all that much, because many of these bands changed genres as the years went by. Metallica became more of a rock band, Def Leppard became a pop act, and Ozzy Osbourne became a reality TV-star. Oh well. :?

If you're looking for a more contemporary term that can be used to describe all of these bands at once, "Hair Metal" works just fine.

P.S. One thing we can both agree on: back then, to even mention ABBA in the same sentence as these groups could get you stabbed! :D

I agree with this, I mis spoke, Although bands like GnR, AC/DC and Motley Crue, stradled the line between Metal and Rock. The Crue are as far as I would go as one of the "hair metal" that had some talent.

The others are, as you described, hair bands, and more in the mode of copycat metal/rock....almost all their songs followed a formula and showed little inspiration...ie.. Queit Riot's "big" songs were covers of an old english rock band called Slade. Most of these bands had a Ballad to make their names, followed by on hit wonder songs that could be done by anyone of them...cue the guitar solo!!

Some may mistake, Van Halen or GnR as hair bands, but if you listened to them, you would hear that they brought true musical talent to the table. I would include Def Lepard in the hard rock category too, Pyromania was historic in that it marked the end of the "New Wave" movement (I think they knocked MJ's Thriller off number one) and redirected music back into the more guitar oriented direction.

I agree with this also, although I think Bon Jovi was more the king of the hair bands (the pop wing). They were certainly commercial but barely "Hard" IMO...I think Def Lepard was certainly more rock than BJ were. Of course all subjective.

Actually, I got away with saying I liked ABBA, (although true I wouldn't state it to Metal Heads I did not know fearing the removal of my Metal badge  ), because my friends knew I came from England (good rock/metal props for coming from the land of Led Zep, Black Sabbath and Judas Priest), so I got a pass for being foreign...lol And no one could have a problem with a band which had women fronting them like Agnetha and Frida!! :D :D :D

That's pretty surprising to me actually because GNR and AC/DC seem as hardcore, heavy riff laden as you can get. I think Heavy Metal fanatics (generally speaking) can tend to be as "snobbish" about what is considered "pure" as any other type of musical fan. I saw a show on VH1 not too long ago, I think it was called "A headbanger's Journey" where this lifelong metal fan documents the history of Metal and takes a look the latest incarnations of Metal categorization. Apparently there are now 40-50 different categories and sub-categories of Metal! That program really made me feel old, I didn't have a clue. Granted I wouldn't consider myself a Metal fan for many years now, but I didn't realize how much I had lost touch with the genre.

Although I always considered AC/DC Heavy Metal, I saw a documentary on them a few years back, and Angus Young himself said he never considered them a Metal band either. He said " I always considered us just a good old-fashioned rock band". Don't know about old-fashioned, but there it is. :D

I agree on bands like Motley Crue being classified as "Hair Metal". I also heard the term "Glam Metal" being applied to them by critics. Personally I never liked any of the hair bands of the 80's, my brother was a big fan though. (we went round and round on that one.... :) )

Bruce

PS: I was never a fan of Metallica, it was all too fast, mosh pit style music and I was already an old married man by that time. BUT, I did buy the Black Album and frankly I thought that it was a Metal masterpiece. My son explained to me that that isn't the real Metallica, that they had "sold-out" by that time.... whatever that means? sounded like incredibly good music to me, that's all I know. :?

I think if someone told Axel Rose that GNR was a "Hair Band" he'd knock them out.... LOL

Brother, you are talking gospel! In the case of Guns 'N Roses, they actually do have something in common with ABBA when it comes to the brilliance and quality of their studio recordings(thanks in no small part to their producer Mike Clink). Again, like ABBA, only of late have they begun to receive the kind of recognition they deserve, mostly from the newer generation of fans.

Without a doubt, Guns 'N Roses were in a class by themselves.

I find it interesting how some of GNR's best work are also their least known songs. Just listen to the beautiful complexity of songs such as Rocket Queen, Estranged, and Yesterday, and you'll see what I mean. As for me, my favorite GNR tracks are Nighttrain and Breakdown, both of them musical masterpieces of the highest order!

hello

i do not pigeon hole myself as a rocker or a metaler.
i like it hard and fast.
i like it heavy and slow.
i also like punk , well , when it first appeared.

i have seen most of the bands you have mentioned in this topic. (the advantage of living near London)
of course i have not seen all of them.
no one could see all the bands they wanted to.

any body i ever talked to knew i would listen to any thing before i passed judgement.
i did not say i did not like something very often.
up until 1992 ish no one knew i liked ABBA because neither did i!
it was Abba Gold that turned my head

gary :D

Regards johnsteven :)

I think someone should open Rock and Roll thread because I can't qualify Queen as hard rock or heavy metal for example, let alone The Great Rolliing Stones etc...

Am I a hard rock fan at all?

If I say Aerosmith I believe they'd fall into pure rock category?

Put PINK FLOYD can't be into hard rock or can they? They are just too psyhodelic.. :dead:

Not a metal fan at all.
