Mary O'Brien was a one off, exceptionally talented singer and is a huge gay icon. I rate her very highly but was surprised to discover she didn't write any songs whatsoever! Not that it mattered I suppose when you have a voice as unique as that.

'What Have I Done To Deserve This' and 'Spooky' are my two favourites.
Such a shame she had to lead a closeted life and left us so tragically soon. :(

Saw another doco on her today and it showed a bit of her funeral. With all the celebs turning up. Yes tragic she left us so soon, amazing voice.

Dusty is widely regarded as the UK's best ever Female Singer.

However, she never became as big as she should have been - either
in the UK or the USA.

She had just one UK No. 1 - 'You Don't Have to Say You Love Me' (1966)
It was an Italian Song, that was re-written in English for Dusty.
It was also her biggest USA Hit - No.4 there.

She had just 2 other USA Top 10 Solo Hits. 'Wishin' & Hopin' - No.6
(1964 - Not released in the UK- A No.13 Hit for The Merseybeats, there).
The other was, 'Son Of A Preacher Man' - USA No.10 (No.9 in the UK).
(1968)

Her 2nd biggest UK Solo Hit was, 'I Just Don't Know What To Do With
Myself' - No.3 in 1964 - not released in the USA - a No.26 Hit there,
for Dionne Warwick, in 1966.

And her 1987 Hit, with the Pet Shop Boys - 'What Have I Done To
Deserve This?', was No.2 in the UK & the USA.

It was perfectly normal for 1960's, (& 1950's), Female Acts to
have everything written for them. It was the same for Connie Francis,
in the 1950's/early 1960's, & British Singers such as Helen Shapiro,
(2 UK No.1's in 1961), Cilla Black, (2 UK No.1's in 1964), Sandie Shaw,
(3 UK No.1's - 1964, 1965, 1967), & so on.

Petula Clark was the same - although she co-wrote 'You're The One',
with Tony Hatch in 1965. It Peaked at No.23 in the UK, but was Covered
by USA Male Group, The Vogues, in the USA & their version was a
No.4 Hit, & Million Seller there. (In 1965).

Of ALL The UK Female Acts whom I have mentioned in this Post,
Dusty is the only one who can sell Hundreds of Thousands of
Compilation/Hits Albums in the UK.

She has a big UK Hit Compilation every 4 or 5 Years, or so. One of
her Budget, (low priced), UK 'Best Of's', was No.1 in the UK Budget
Chart for a total of SEVENTEEN WEEKS - reaching No.1 twice. It was
called 'The Hits Collection', & came out in 2000.

FILM - A MOVIE is being made about Dusty - with, (it is rumored),
Nicole Kidman playing her in the lead Role. (HOPEFULLY(!) Nicole
will simply Mime to the Dusty Hits, & NOT try to Sing the Songs
herself!).

Hopefully the Film will get her noticed again in the USA etc.
And she can - perhaps - have a UK No.1 Album in the MAIN UK
Album Chart - she has never had one before. (She's on Universal
- like ABBA).

Dusty singing her biggest International Hit:,

'You Don't Have To Say You Love Me'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBwSN0Yw5l0

It was a originally a 1965 Italian No.1 for one of its co-writers
- Pino Donaggio. Its Italian Title was, 'Io Che Non Vivo Senza Te'.

Dusty heard the Song at the Sanremo Song Festival in Italy, & asked
Simon Napier-Bell & Vicki Wickham to write English lyrics for it.
The result was 'You Don't Have To Say You Love Me'.

AND - Singing her 2nd biggest USA Hit - 'Wishin' & Hopin'. It was
not released in the UK - where it would certainly have been a
Top 5 Hit. It reached No.6 in the USA Hot 100.
