Musical "I Am The City"
The musical MM! has over 24 ABBA songs (and bits of others), yet there are many other songs that are not used.
I was wondering what could be done with other ABBA songs, including some that are not "strictly" ABBA productions. This is a bare bones concept for a new musical - "I Am The City."
Girl goes to big city, falls in love, falls out love, falls back in love, big finish, the end. A typical 30s - 40s musical... Sub plot includes another couple where things do NOT work out.
So here is how I've laid it out -
Arrival
I Am The City
Eagle
Kisses of Fire
Dream World
Tiger
Just Like That (heavy saxophone riff in this one)
Your Owe Me One
Put On Your White Sombrero
When The Waves Roll Out To Sea (instrumental)
When All is Said and Done
Someone Else's Story
Summer Night City
Lovelight
The Way Old Friends Do
As Good As New
I Am the City (reprise)
Rob
Tell me what you think, and suggestions are welcome! :-)

Great idea Rob! :D
If you don't mind, I would add some suggestions.
The musical could be divided in 5 parts:
PART 1
A typical country girl lives in a farm with his parents. She has an special talent: an impressive voice. Everyone was amazed by they way she sang. Her most desired dream was to go to New York, where she could sing in the theatre. But their parents didn't want to, so one night, she run away from home and starts the long way to the big city.
*In this part, I would add "I'm Just A Girl"
PART 2
She arrives to New York in a cold night. Then she realizes that is not going to be easy to success. She went to Broadway and it was an opening night. She was fascinated by the stars and rich people coming out of the theatre. But she was freezing on the outside, when a handsome young man sees her. He goes and gives her his coat and they like each other. But he had to go.
On the next morning she starts to look for a place to stay and work. She finds it in a groceries shop near to Broadway, were a kind woman offers her a room and work.
She finds the boy again on the same Broadway street and they start dating and they felt in love. They were the happiest couple. But shortly after, the boy was member of a prestigious family, who want him to marry a rich heiress very soon. He didn't want to leave the girl, but still broke up and engaged with the rich girl.
PART 3
The girl was broken-hearted, but carries on and continue working. One day at the shop, she starts singing with her beautiful voice. There it was a famous Broadway producer who listens to her and was fascinated. He said she must go to an audition for his next show. She does, and wins the leading role. But there, there was an ambitious girl who was jelaous and and makes things difficult for her.
PART 4
The opening night of the new musical was a complete success. Everyone was amazed with the girl's voice. Among the audience, there was the uptown boy. He goes to meet her after the show, but she didn't want to see him anymore.
During the following months, she becomes a major star and also a rich girl. She moves to Manhattan, with the old lady who. She tours Paris, London and many more Europe cities. There, in London, she mets a young threatre writer who falls in love with her. He want her to be at his first show, but she said she was a major star and was not going to act in his play.
Shortly after, she returned to New York and attended a ball. There it was, the boy and his wife. He had already married. She was very sad, but he didn't care for her anymore. She understood now that he didn't loved her at all.
PART 5
Her carreer starts to crumble, as the producer was more and more exigent. The audience didn't like her anymore, so he fires her. It was too much pressure to become a major star. So she decides to return to London, were she meets the young writer again. Then, she realised she went there because she was in love with him too. She moves there and acts in his first musical. It was a huge success.
And they married and lived happily ever after.
Hahaha, what do you think?
I just come up with the idea at this moment!

If you need help writing the book, let me know, then we'll sell it to B&B and be billions richer!
Cheers!

Andrea, that is awesome!
You were able to put words to the story, when I had only had time to pick the music - and you can see how the story goes from the song titles.
Mat - billions? I'd be happy with just a couple of hundred thousand... :-)

Thanks, Rob
I don't know how, but your topic inspired me very much!
You gave the idea, and I came up with the story :D
Since I'm a writer, I was desperate because I couldn't find inspiration anywhere.
Now I'm writing one of my novels, I came up with an interesting new chapter...

Keep writing! Listen hard when the Muse is telling you to write something.
You never know where those words from your pen or keyboard will take you!
Rob (who is also trying to write a bit - sci-fi mostly - but not published yet)

Thanks for the kind words, Rob :D
I'll surely listen more to the Muse!
I didn't knew you were a writer too, a sci-fi story sounds interesting! Finish and publish it! You'll never know what will happen
Good luck with it!

It sounds great, but I've never heard of any song called Someone Else's Story.

Zeebee - "Someone Else's Story" is from one of the versions of Chess. I think it's sung by Florence. A B&B song - not strictly ABBA.
She's giving advice to a love-lorn girl about how things should have gone. The final line is "of course the girl is me."

Andrea,
Part of my motivation to play this little mind game was that I just heard the complete version of "I Am The City." A great song, and one that should have been released in 1982, not 1993! Anyway, the beat of that song and the words made me feel like I was on my first trip to New York City. A very vibrant "electrifying" feeling.
There must be writers plotting how to make another musical using other ABBA songs. So why not our flights of fancy go?
Curiously, I am off to Los Angeles on business tomorrow. Another vibrant and exciting place. So in this little exercise, think of the excitement of the "big city!" Maybe the song titles I picked, and the moods they evoke, say it all?

How about 'I am Sex in the City'? :P Each one of the 4 girls would have her own song.
Samantha: "Lovers Live a Little Longer" (she's the hypersexual one)
Charlotte: "Lovelight" (she's the romantic)
Miranda: "Me and I" or "The Name of the Game" (she's the bitter one)
Sarah Jessica Parker: "Just Like That" (about Mr Big)

Ah, if only the show"Sex in the City" had done a musical send up of themselves, but they did not.
Cute idea though.

Years ago, long before Mamma Mia, the movie Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band gave me the idea of doing the same sort of thing with ABBA songs. I wrote a general plot outline. It was mostly about the relationship of a couple named Fernando and Chiquitita. Other characters included Chiquitita's best friend Nina (the pretty ballerina) and a woman named Carrie (not the kind of girl you'd marry), with whom Fernando has a brief relationship during a time when he and Chiquitita are broken up. The problem was, I wanted to use as many songs as I could, which was just too many songs. There are songs I had yet to hear (TDBYC, Under Attack, Put On Your White Sombrero, Dream World, I Am The City, and all the non-album B-sides), otherwise I would've used even more songs. (I wonder-no pun intended-exactly how many songs were used in Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band?) I had Fernando and Chiquitita breaking up and getting back together so many times, it was ridiculous. I thought I had long since thrown away what I wrote, but I just found it and re-read it. I think it could be revised into something pretty good, but I have to ask myself, what the heck was I thinking about certain songs?

Hi there,
Yea, the other songs are the best anyway, so I've always thought they would make a more interesting musical - maybe not so much fun, but interesting.
Liked your ideas, there is SO much that could be done using these fantastic songs.
I wrote an outline plot for mine a while back, but see seperate thread, as I don't want to get in the way of yours. :o)
