? Most Unlikely Place to Hear ABBA Music
I travel alot and have played ABBA music in some very strange locations over the years. To name just a few:

Eagle and The Singles: The First Ten Years screaming out of the car radio along I-90 in Montana criss-crossing the Yellowstone River nearly paralleling the route Lewis and Clark took.

Dancing Queen, Knowing Me, Knowing You and others from the top of Mauna Kea in Hawaii driving to the NASA Observatory.

Our Last Summer on the shores of Lake Michigan at a beach barbeque.

And most surreal of all, a mix I recorded just for the Alaskan Wilderness driving from Anchorage and Fairbanks to Denali National Park.

So where is the most unlikely location that you have either played ABBA music or heard it played?

Cheers!

Matt Urdan

Well, I grew up in Wasilla, Alaska in the Matanuska Valley, which is half way between Anchorage and Mt. McKinley (we didn't call it Denali in my day). I played ABBA quite frequently during my youth. Are you saying my childhood was surreal??

Come to think of it.... my childhood was surreal.... nevermind.

I heard Voulez-vous once in a bag boutique. I almost spent a fortune on another bag I didn't really need thanks to ABBA but fortunately the common sense prevailed.

ABBA Gold CD was played in a bus full of my colleagues as we were going on a field trip, which happened on the day of the ESC (better said Eurosong :P ) last year - as a warm-up for the evening. Some people wanted to listen to some folk music  but I was way too loud for ABBA so they let me have it my way! 8)

All around the wonderful and green Greek island of Thassos - have deliberately "forgotten" to remind the hubby to bring his CDs and of course brought my own ABBA compilation! It was just about the only music besides the radio we had last summer in the car!

I was in a nightclub recently and SHOCK! HORROR! the DJ played the disconet mix of 'Lay All Your Love On Me' ..to my surprise the dance floor was soon heaving to the pulse of hot, sweaty, obsessed bodies!! Before I realised what was happening I found myself amongst them.... 8)

Wherever next? My local supermarket?

We were in a Wendy's restaurant in Lucasville, Ohio (home of a prison no less) and heard "Dancing Queen" from the overhead speakers.

Another was at my daughter's high school graduation and the symphonic band was playing a mega-mix of ABBA goodies. The oddest thing was I was distracted while trying to find my wife in the crush, and it took about a half a minute for the old brain to pick up on the music, but there was "something" about the music that was just bugging me. Then the ah-ha! kicked in.

Then I was at my wife's highschool reunion (30th) and the DJ started to play Dancing Queen, and my dear wife, who is not the biggest ABBA fan in the hosue, dragged me to the dance floor - where the ratio of females to males was about 12 to one! :-)

That's right Bruce, I was thinking about this forum last January in Alaska and what might make a good post a year into the future, and as I was driving through Wasilla in the darkness on my way to the Talkeetna Ranger Station for my first view of Denali, I couldn't get you out of my head. Although I had never met you nor heard of you, I kept thinking to myself: "Bruce. Bruce. Bruce. I bet somewhere near here, some time ago, a child named Bruce lived and grew up listening to ABBA." And I thought to myself, Man, that's surreal.

:D Have a great day!

Hehe, yeah my wife might add that her 20 year marriage to myself has been a surreal experience for her as well. I think "Bruce, Bruce, Bruce" playing in your head would probably be more nightmare than surreal.

All silliness aside. Let me take a crack at your topic. Hmmm....I heard a Muzak version of Dancing Queen going up in an elevator in the Transamerica building in San Francisco. That was pretty unlikely. Does Muzak count?

Bruce

BTW: The muzak version of Dancing Queen is :puke:

For me I was ready to into surgery at hospital, And I asked the Doctor to wait before putting me out to it as Dancing Queen was on the radio. Just as the final notes died out on the radio station That was it.

I couldn't remember anything else

You would never believe me!

Last week I went to a tribute to Iron Maiden. I'm not fancy about metal, but I had to go because my friends were going to perform that evening. So we were at this popular pub, waiting for the show to begin. While we were sitting there, there was a 70's disco playing. I was convinced that any ABBA song was going to be played... but suddenly: Dancing Queen!

I was in shock, not because of the song, but of the people's reaction. My friends were happy for me, but all the guys and girls there (most of them were painted like gothics and wearing chains and that sort of things) began to shout saying: Change that dull song! So they did, and suddenly Mick Jagger's voice singing Start Me Up replaced Agnetha and Frida's...

songs
Actually, here in Oklahoma USA, a lot of our local restaurants play music from the 70's on their stereo systems for the listening pleasures of their "thirty/forty-something" customers! I find that many places here now play a lot of Pop songs from the 70's/80's now...that keeps us happy, and coming into their establishements. It is no mistake that they are catering to the consumers that listened to this music as teenagers.

I too attended a "rock" concert with my 14 year old daughter last month and BEFORE the metal/indie concert began, many 70's dance/pop songs were played loudly on stage, including Dancing Queen and several Blondie and Pretenders/Police/Cars songs....it was fun to hear them, and quite a surprise! :P

I was happy when they played Dancing Queen, but instantly, everybody was asking to change the song...

listen abba's music
Hello Matt,
What a good and funny topic!
I don't travel enough to have such experiences like you and the others in this topic but i listen "the visitors", in the "défilé de pret a porter" from Christian Lacroix, a great couturier and designer in France, and more funny but real, in a shop in Geneve, in the WC, when you "tire la chasse" (i don't know the english translation of that) :flush: , sorry for this remember, the music "money money money" (with a computer voice like the ring phones) plays, because you must pay something to the quality of property. I was really hilarious and all my chidren wanted going to this public wc. I hope it's not a switzerland tribute to Frida because she lives in Zermatt :D :D :D :D

Pierre

A second hand ABBA music story, I'm afraid -

A co-worker was in a night club in Stockholm, Sweden, being there for a business trip about two and a half years ago. He was there with our local business agent, who thought he should see what a Swedish night club looked like, before flying home in the morning.

He told me that the club was packed, and there was a rather loud local rock band on the tiny stage belting out lord know's what. The customers were mostly young-ish business types, relaxing after a long day - lot's of drinking going on.

The band took a break. Then the disc jockey started a tape, as ceiling mounted laser beams and disco balls started up. Suddenly the sounds of "Dancing Queen" shot from the speakers.

The crowd CHEERED and started dancing like mad, four hundred or so, chock-a-block bumping and grinding. DQ was followed by "Super Trouper" and "Voulez-Vous". At which point the band came back and the tape was turned off.

The crowd BOOED and then went back to drinking.

I have heard Chiquitita and Angeleyes as background music in my local doctors surgery. It was BBC radio 2, who tend to play alot of abba, its usually chiquitita, Take A chance on me, and Dancing queen. one Dj, Terry Wogan has been known to play tracks off MCB. , however I have never heard Angeleyes before on british radio and I just happened to be in the right place at the right time,. I was so shocked and sat there listening that i missed my name being called. I've also heard abba played in the supermarket, It must be the same tape all the time cos its KNowing me knowing you, and believe it or not I know theres something going on, I stopped in my tracks by the baked beans to listen :D

In a skanky old charity shop in Birmingham where I was looking for old vinyl. The grim surroundings were soon shining like 'Lovelight' due to Agnetha and Frida's dulcet tones. I mentioned as much to the manager and now when I call in she puts ABBA on for me! How kind of the old dear. Bless her.. :rotfl: I want to say to her: " A cup of tea and a biscuit wouldn't go amiss..."

Now I remember another story.

A few months ago, I was at the station at 10 pm, waiting for my Lima-Trujillo bus.
I was with my university group at the cafe room. When suddenly, at the radio they played Chiquitita in Spanish.
I was very happy when I heard it, but specially because my friends (even my teacher) were singing it.

It was great!

Radio stations play Abba's music from time to time
But just hits such as Chiquitita, Dancing Queen, Gracias por la musica and a few more from the Oro/Gold album.
But one night while i was reading on my bed, around 1 am.,
i heard Felicidad (Happy new year spanish version) play it on the radio.
It was really unusual for a local station to play this song
the least known song that i've heard on the radio was Hasta mañana
but this really surprised me.

Hi Lutfi,

ABBA being played regularly in Turkey?? Now that is, at least to my mind, a quite unlikely place I would expect to hear ABBA. That is wonderful! :D

Cheers,
Bruce

PS: Istanbul is on my short list to visit when I make my world tour someday. The ancient city of Byzantium and Constantinople, the Hagia Sophia, some great history and culture in your city! And maybe I can play my ABBA albums without being stoned to death. (Hehe)

Hmmm, well Matt, my "stoned" reference was a tongue-in-cheek reference to a manner of punishment that was at times used when Turkey was part of the Ottoman Empire.

I married my High School sweetheart and moved from Alaska to California in 1986. As to any drug use that I may, or may not have been involved with in my youth....ahem....no comment.

At a nail salon. This place is so low-key and privately owned by city locals. I would have never expected to hear 'Does Your Mother Know' in the background while having my nails done.

Strangely enough, another surprising place to hear ABBA was at another salon. But this time it was at a high-end, trendy hair salon near Los Angeles. First you hear your modern sounds, with big-name music artists and what not...then out of no where come's ABBA's 'Waterloo.' What a delight that was. :D

Oh, and I heard 'SOS' at BJs last night. Just thought I'd throw that bit of information in there.

Hi Bruce,
Turkey is modern country, especially in USA people is not knowing very well Turkey and Turkish peoples. I think that USA people need more to discover another side of world.
You will be welcome to the my country, dont worry everywhere ,every restoraunt play ABBA music!!!

Turkey is modern and very different than Ottoman Empire time. Turkey is not part of Otoman,Turkey are continue of Turkish generation from Ottoman Empire. Now is Republic of Turkey.
Also Istanbul and Anatolia have old historical culture.
Turkish democracy have short history, what democracy are in Europe same are in Turkey.

I try to explaine that new generation in Turkey now commence to discover ABBA music. Our generation very well are know ABBA music.

Kind Regards

Re: ? Most Unlikely Place to Hear ABBA Music

ABBAnator - 31.01.2007, 22:57

Hi Lutfi,

My comment about being stoned to death was just a joke as I stated, I certainly never seriously thought that might happen. I know Turkey is a modern democracy like most of the western world and has been a very good friend to the United States for many decades. :)

I personally like to think I know a little bit about Turkey and the rest of the world as world history has been a passion of mine throughout my life, but certainly there is so much more to discover (that's what makes it so enjoyable :) ). As for my countrymen, I agree they need a serious dose of understanding. My sister-in-law is from Romania, her family lives in a small village, and she has told me that many people in her village actually thought that the streets were paved in gold in the United States! So I think all peoples of the world can benefit from a little more understanding of other countries and cultures, it goes both ways. :)

Getting back to ABBA.... :) , isn't music a wonderful thing? I wonder if Bjorn, Benny, Agnetha and Frida ever imagined that their music would bring all peoples from around the world together in mutual appreciation? Without ABBA it wouldn't be likely that we would all be interacting in such a mutually friendly and understanding way. :D There are folks from Korea, Indonesia, Australia, Turkey, United States, Peru and all across Europe on this forum alone! Simply wonderful.

I think that might be a new topic: What do you think the members of ABBA feel about the impact of ABBA music bringing people all around the world together? hmmm.... :D

Cheers!
Bruce

One night about 10 years ago I was on patrol in a small town in Saskatchewan (I am a police officer) when I heard ABBA being played in the backgoround when I contacted my dispatch centre. I asked them to keep the microphone open until the song was finished. We all had a laugh over that and the song was Dancing Queen

I was flying from Los Angeles to Cincinnati this week heading into the evening hours. The 757 had those fancy seat back TVs built into them, which give you flight information, music, movies, and so on.

After I watched a movie (it's a 4+ hour flight) I started checking out the music selections. In the CD section 60s-70s was a record "Disco Hits 2" and... drum roll, "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!" was on that CD.

I have a lot of ABBA music on my PDA, which I had with me, but it was neat to hear "my" pop music coming from the Delta Airlines.

I also found the latest Madonna CD "Confessions on a Dance Floor" so I had to listen to "Hung Up", but you know what I was really hearing!

And also ... listening to ZZ Top's "Legs" at full volume while the orange sun sank in the west and the wall of night climbed from the horizon in the east, all happening at 750 miles an hour, was a blast.

I can't remeber hearing ABBA at any quit unlike place. I use to get a bit startled if I hear an ABBA song being plaed in a store or such. usually I haven't even noticed there's music played in the background before I notice that. However it's not a very strange place to hear ABBA, even if you don't excpect it, but check out this  :
