John, How strange! I just happened to be playing Vienna as you were posting this, so when I finished listening to the song there it was listed here, CREEPY! Anyway yeah Veinna was i think thier finest, and songs like Dancing with Tears in my Eyes and Hymn were not bad either.

Vienna was a very popular song! I am amazed it wasn't No. 1.

Ivana it only reached number 2 here in The UK. It was number 2 for about three weeks I think. Shame its was good enough to be number 1

If somebody would ask me how popmusic in the eighties sounded, I would say to him: "Listen to Ultravox and you will hear the typical sound of that decade!"

It was actually number 2 in the UK for 4 weeks - kept off the top spot by Joe Dolce's Shaddup You Face - but if you look at the top 100 best selling songs for the whole of the 80's, it came in at number 43 whereas Joe could only manage number 52!
Such a travesty! But hey, that's life...fab tune though.

Lots of UK Chart Watchers got very upset, in 1981, when Joe Dolce got to Number 1, & 'Vienna' could not get higher than Number 2.
However, this is because a lot of people misunderstand how Charts work. A Number 2 Hit can outsell the Single that kept it off the Number 1 spot - if the Number 2 Hit stays in the Top 10 for longer.
That is exactly what Ultravox's 'Vienna', did in 1981.
The Joe Dolce Hit did this in the Top 10:,
3 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 3 - 10 = 6 Top 10 Weeks
'Vienna' did this in the Top 10:,
6 - 3 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 4 - 7 = 8 Top 10 Weeks
It was held at Number 2 in its first Number 2 Week, by 'Woman', by John Lennon, & for its next 3 Number 2 Weeks, by Joe Dolce.
However, 'Vienna', was in the Top 10 for 2 more Weeks, than the Joe Dolce Hit - so it sold more copies. It was the 5th Best Selling UK Hit of 1981, & Joe Dolce's was the 8th.
'Vienna' went even further ahead in UK Sales, when it Re-Charted in 1993 - reaching Number 13. So a Number 1 Hit, is not always a bigger seller than a Number 2 Hit.....Sometimes, not even a bigger seller, than a Number 2 Hit, that it keeps off the Number 1 spot.

I think he was in a band called Slick or something. I have a feeling that whatever their big hit was, it replaced Mamma Mia at number 1 - the cheek of these people! I hope he can live with himself... LOL

You're right, abbagav- it was Slick but don't feel bad about ABBA getting turfed off the top spot; after all, didn't ABBA's 'Mamma Mia' knock Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' off it's perch? 8)

And, when 'Mamma Mia', knocked 'Bohemian Rhapsody' off the Number 1 spot, it was noticed that the ABBA Hit was mentioned in the Queen Song's Lyrics - 'Mama Mia, Mama Mia, Mama Mia, Let Me Go'......
And in November 1980, 'Super Trouper', knocked, 'The Tide Is High', by Blondie, off the Number 1 spot, (UK), & it was noticed that both Hits had references to a 'Number One' in them.
Blondie - 'I'm gonna be your number one'.
ABBA - 'Feeling like a number one'

I'm not too fimiliar with their other stuff, I think the only one I know was "Reap The Wild Wind" that was a great song, that shouldv'e been (as Casey Kasem would say) number one with a bullet!
