ABBA would have made it trough the 80's?
Hi guys,

Since I'm a big fan of the 80's music, I was wondering if ABBA would have had the same success as they had through the mid-70's.
"The Visitors" was released in 1982, when the 80's style was still been created. Songs with more electronic and somehow, cold and repetitive tunes. Everything was superficial and exagerate at that decade, from what I've heard.
So, I think ABBA's music wouldn't have fitted with that "steryotipe" (sorry if the spelling is wrong). Songs like "I Let The Music Speak", "The Visitors" and "One of Us" were a completely different style.
I read that at that time, people didn't like ABBA anymore and "One of Us" was their last hit. They were accostumed to the happy young couples who were having fun and singing "Dancing Queen", rather than the serious divorced adults who were singing "The Day Before You Came".
So, that was it. I think the world wouldn't have been prepared for ABBA for those years. A superficial music wouldn't understand such superb music.

Love,

Hi Andrea,

difficult to tell, but I think they wouldn't have been that successful anymore. Somehow I agree with a statement made in the "The Winner Takes It All" documentary saying that they lost touch with their audience because of getting less commercial. The music still was good but less mainstream.

I think they still would have been able to achieve smaller hits here and there (Just Like That would have made it perhaps, One Night In Bangkok was one for B&B), but that's it.

Well, they could have started to make music just as they like, not care about any commercial aspects and get some reputation elsewhere. But besides all personal problems and aims I don't know if they - as ABBA! - would have been content with it not being in the front row anymore.

On the other hand we don't know, if their music style at that time would have been temporary only.

Tough

Yes and no.

Musically they were moving to the musical stage, that was there when The Visitors was released.
I Let The Music Speak is a good example. But I think the boys could still write a good pop song. Shapes Was a good example of that. They wanted to see if they still had it.

If they had of re-recorded JUST LIKE THAT then I reckon they could have still done well during the '80's.

But Bjorn said they only had the window open for a certian amount of time with the younger generation.

The songs on the Visitors were more grown up and darker. My favourite recording by ABBA. Personally I would have liked them to continue as I would have liked to see the music they would have recorded. I reckon it would have been different still to the work on the Visitors Album.

But then again we would not have gotton Chess, Kristina, so there we go.

80's
I don't think that ABBA as a group would have survived the entire 1980's...maybe one more album with some fresh new music would have created a new "buzz", but I think the the ABBA sound, the members, and the group as a whole were spent at the time they split.

Musically, obviously, Benny ans Bjorn were not through, and neither were Agnetha and Frida...just they needed to pursue indvidual careers and "move on".....

I believe that the demise of the group was timed perfectly, and each of them had they continued to try as a group, would not be as "happy" with their situations as they are now. Now, they are able to reflect and enjoy some of the rewards of their 10+ years of being a group...

Just my opinion!

By the 80's ABBA had transcended their earlier fluffy-ness and had moved on but the world hadn't and it wasn't prepared to accept the new, darker ABBA. People still wanted them to be Bang A Boomerang-ing but the dynamics of the group had changed with the divorces so it was in a way inevitable that they would part at the start of the 80's as they had achieved what they set out to do. We were lucky because we had the best of them- the earlier euphoric Dancing Queen and Mamma Mia and the wonderful TWTIA, One Of Us, When All Is Said And Done, etc after things had gone pear shaped so we really did get the best of them.

hey, well i dont think abba would have gotten anywhere in the 80's if they were still a band. i dont know, the visitors didn't do so well, and yes i aggre they were going more into the musical stage.

the other point i have to make is. if they were still in abba, we wouldn't have gotten any agnetha or frida's solo material. which i like alot (agnetha's) so i think it was a good idea to split, they just weren't as big anymore like they were in the 70's.

and i also heard that people started not liking abba in the 80's. but i cant remember where i heard that from.

Yes,

I like the solo material by both Girls, I Stand Alone, My Colouring Book & Djupa Antedag are Brillant. just a shame thought they never or not as yet released a Dvd, especally for Agnetha.

It's true that in the 80's ABBA were considered 'old hat' and were confined to the 70's dustbin. New bands had emerged and ABBA seemed destined to be forgotten and thought of forever as just a novelty act from the 70's of some sort. How wrong that was!!!! But it wasn't 'til the 90's really with 'ABBA Gold' that people realised that ABBA's music was classic and timeless. As if die hard fans needed telling!

Would ABBA have been successful had they continued through the Eighties? Yes, they would have. I too am a fan of Eighties music, and in that decade there were several notable groups from the Seventies that, with only slight modification to their style, managed to have some major hits. Fleetwood Mac is an excellent example - Aerosmith is another. Heart managed some degree of success in the Eighties as well. Elton John continued to make hits into the 90's, and U2 is selling albums today.
