Listen to "Weekend" from Earth & Fire, and it´s easy to imagine ABBA performing it!

I could imagine ABBA singing Gemini songs only the ones that Bjorn And Benny wrote, to be honest I couldn't imagine them singing Boney M stuff.
Mind you they could sing anything out of Chess and Kristina, I guess that is because of the Bjorn & Benny factor, along with Mick they know the girls voices.

During the Olivia Newton-John special in 1978, ABBA joined ONJ and Andy Gibb in singing the Cat Stevens hit "Remember the Days of the Old School Yard". I can't recall the tv special, but I came across the song on WINMX. It was a very bad bootleg, but Frida and Agnetha were incredible on the last verse of the song and as backing vocalists for ONJ.
It made me wonder what other songs out there Frida and Agnetha and ABBA could have performed, and here's my wishlist:
1. If I Can't Have You from Saturday Night Fever. Fact: The BeeGees offered this to ABBA first, but ABBA turned the Gibb Brothers down because they only recorded their own material. Yvonne Elliman turned it into a #1 hit worldwide. Considering how large Saturday Night Fever was, this would have been ABBA's biggest hit in the states, and a surefire #1. Every time I hear this song, I can hear ABBA singing it. I really believe the BeeGees wrote this song for ABBA.
2. I Know Him So Well. Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson made this a 4-week chart topper in the UK, but you know this song was really written to take advantage of Agnetha's and Frida's voices and ranges. If ABBA had recorded this song, it might have been somewhat autobiographical as well, don't you think?
3. Magic by Olivia Newton-John.
4. Hold On by Wilson Phillips.
5. How come ABBA never wrote a song for a James Bond Movie? The Spy Who Loved Me or For Your Eyes Only would both be awesome interpreted by ABBA. As for an ABBA composition suitable for a James Bond movie, I nominate The Visitors.
6. California Dreaming by The Mamas and Papas. I sure would love to hear ABBA's take on this one.
7. Up, Up and Away by The Fifth Dimension. If there's any group out there that sounds like ABBA, the Fifth Dimension comes closest.
8. We Can Work It Out by The Beatles. I would love to hear a Beatles classic sung by Frida and Agnetha.
9. One good turn deserves another...ABBA should try Madonna's The Power of Goodbye.
10. We Got The Beat by the Go-Go's. Just because.
Cheers!

Some very intresting choices I agrre with you on some points, The Bond theme and songs from Chess, It also would have been intresting if ABBA had of recorded If I Can't Have You from Saturday Night Fever, I reckon it would of given ABBA a second Number 1 in the States.
But as you said ABBA did not wan't to record anyones but their own songs.

I would like to have heard Wilson Phillips cover some ABBA songs.
I would also like to hear ABBA interpret some Heart songs.

Hi Elad,
I'm very glad and I think it's one of the essentials of ABBA that they had no problems in creating their own material. There are so many songs and demos from all eras before, during and after ABBA which easily could have been turned into successfull ABBA tunes! 3 talented composers and all 4 working together on the actual arrangement - what else is needed? Well, certainly not Dieter Bohlen's help!
Sorry, nothing against your opinion of course. :)
Joachim
Regarding Dieter Bohlen, I actually should use :puke: for the first and probably only time...

Hi Elad
I always thougth that Abba would have done a fantastic job on "It must have been love" by Roxette.
I also think "If I can't have you" would have been a great choice. Imgaine if they had sung it on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack!!!
Another song could have been "The air that I breathe".
I also agree that they should have sang "I know him so well" together. What a dream that would have been!!!
And funny I always thought that Mama Cass and Michelle Phillips sounded a lot like Abba on their backup vocals so I also think California Dreaming would have been great well.
Maybe Woman in love by Barbra Streisand????
Cheers!

What about "I'm Alive (Let's Move On)". Disco song from 1982-1983 by a studio group that actually SOUNDS like ABBA. When it first came out we all thought it was ABBA. It's a cool track, and if ABBA had done it the vocals would have blown us away and the instrumentation would have been marvelous.
P.S. You have to hear the original EUROPEAN mix to get the ABBA sound. The American remix turned up the reverb, muted the sound, and messed with the equalization, and, as usual, when we in the US mess with the UK's music, it basically sucks (IMO).

There are so many songs that I could imagine ABBA singing and covering exceptionally well that I couldn't list them all here but one that springs to mind is 'You're My Heart, You're My Soul' by Modern Talking. Joachim mentioned it earlier and I have a copy from when it was first released and so I checked it out again and it is spot on! So melodic, it would've made a great actual ABBA recording.

Sorry Joe, but I don't think you really wanted to refer to me (or do I understand you wrong?), because I rather am the "killer" yet again (as on the remixes topic...)!
