How much of the music did Björn write?
My understanding is that when Benny and Björn collaborated on writing ABBA music, they both wrote the music and then the lyrics were written by Björn. (Yes, there were a few exceptions.)

So do anyone of you knowledgeable fans out there know about the composing credits for the musicals? Björn wrote the original Swedish lyrics for Kristina från Duvemåla, and Tim Rice wrote the lyrics for Chess, based in part on Björn's "scratch" lyrics. But did Björn collaborate on the music for these musicals? Does anyone know if the music was mostly from Benny, or did the guys truly collaborate on the music for the musicals?

Hi Daniel, I've seen your posts here but it seems that lately we haven't crossed each other's path

Now I don't know anything about Chess, but I read that when they came up with the idea of writing Kristina, Benny insisted to Bjorn that he wanted to take full charge of composing the music, and after he's finished with the music, Bjorn would take full charge of writing the lyrics, and Bjorn agreed with it. So 100% of Kristina's music was composed by Benny, no contribution from Bjorn there.

But I could be wrong, so anyone who knows better, feel free to correct me.

Btw Daniel, have you heard anything from Milena? I emailed her a couple of times but she hasn't replied any of it yet.

Regards,
Tia

Tia,

I have seen you on this forum too, but you're right: we haven't crossed paths much. It's very nice to hear from you again!

Milena and I have kept in touch. She's even written to this new forum several times, although not recently from what I've seen. I know she's pretty busy right now, but I'm sure she'll respond sooner or later.

Thanks for the info on Kristina. I hope more people who know can weigh in on this with more facts.

Hi, Daniel. It's a difficult question since creativity is impossible to measure. Bjorn and Benny have always stated they wrote the music for Abba together: "We just sit down with a piano and a guitar until something happens" Even in Chess they did the same, as far as I know. Nowadays people seem to ignore Bjorn's contribution to the music, probably because in Kristina fram Duvemala the roles were clearly established: Benny-music, Bjorn-lyrics and because Benny has been much more active. The consequence is that people seem to assume that it has always been the same, but I don't believe it. The same goes for the lyrics. I can't imagine Bjorn writing lyrics and Benny just saying: "Yes, yes, yes, perfect". I'm sure he contributed, gave opinions, ideas etc. The fact is that they worked together and nothing was considered finished until both of them agreed. Besides, they have always said hat a lot of ideas came in the studio; so, when the song was written and they were looking for the most appropriate arrangement and started the actual recording, the voices etc they made a lot of changes. So, actually, they worked together and I don't think not even themselves can say now who is responsible for this or that line; every song is the final outcome of a long process. I'm sure even Agnetha and Frida or Michael B. Tretow gave ideas too.
Regards, Daniel

Angel,

What I said to Tia applies to you as well. I've seen you around the site but we haven't talked much so far, for some reason. It's great to hear from you again, too.

I liked your assessment of the guys' respective contributions to the songwriting in no small part because I suspect you're right. I guess we'll never know exactly who did what, but in the end it doesn't matter that much. (Even though I'm the one who asked about it!)

Creative collaboration can be very successful with rigidly defined roles. Most operas start with a book to which a composer creates a score. Some songwriting teams have a lyric person and a music person, as is the case with Bernie Taupin and Elton John. But your observation about the difficulties involved in measuring creativity is spot on, especially in cases such as Björn and Benny; Lennon & McCartney; Jagger and Richards; etc.; in which the collaboration was more all-encompassing.

In the ABBA years The Boys both wrote the Music, and Bjorn later wrote the lyrics to ABBA Songs from 1978. Stig took over other aspects of the ABBA Empire.

That is my understanding anyway I could be wrong.
