Abbawannabes: never the real thing but fun...
Ok, guys we mentioned here many artists who, more or less successfully, desperately tried to capture/recreate the "abbafeel" in their songs (Luv', Brotherhood of Man etc...). We know that most of those acts were just cheesy fun and they shamelessly used the succesful abbaformula to climb the charts. We SO know it, clear as it is! But at least some of that stuff was fun, dont you agree?
So now choose your favourite attempts throught the years. Whos your favourite abbalike songs, your fav abbawannabe artists?
I start from my country, Italy. A singer that surely used some abba atmosphere in his songs for a certain period, hes Riccardo Fogli. Take his "Malinconia" from 1981 >> http://youtube.com/watch?v=gv0VYwzFyNw I think this is a shameless copy and paste of The Winner Takes It All. Obviously its different and I dont dare to compare but the "feel" tries to be almost the same. Anyway, I was a child back then and I remember I used to confuse Riccardo's Malinconia with ABBA's The Winner when catching those melodies on the radio!!
Your turn now...

Hi Bobbysbrother - I don't know if the bands that tried to create an 'ABBAfeel' were necessarily that successful really. I know in the UK in the 70s there was Brotherhood of Man but I think that was more to do with the Eurovision link and the two girls and two boys combination - their songs did not sound like ABBA at all - although they did shamelessly nick ideas for songs like Angelo and Figaro in the same vein as Fernando. And not that I've ever heard the song but apparently Lightning Flash was in the same style as Super Trouper...
The one song I can think of that had the ABBA sound was a number 5 hit in 1982 for Tight Fit called Fantasy Island...funny that it should be 'so' successful when 1982 saw ABBA's hold on the record buying public wane in the UK...
But I'm sure there's more as no doubt as we're about to find out!

For me One More Time songs like Highland, Calming Rain, Turn out the light may sound like Abba's songs.

Abbagav so right there Another Uk Group that tried to copy Abba I guess were Bucks Fizz, I can remember when they first appeared People said over here in the press ABBA impersonators.
As you mentioned Brother Hood OF Man. But you could See I guess it to a degree in some Swedish Acts coming out After ABBA.

Brotherhood Of Man were the abbawannabes for me. This clip of Angerlo I think shows a very (Fernando Style) . Ok its more uptempo then Fernando but two guitars theme of the song. Fernando stamped all over it.
But I like them.

The best one I have ever heard is "Give Me Back My Love" from Maywood. I love it.

Maywood also did a super song called "Late At Night"

The funny thing is that i can't reply to that topic. I never heard of those discussed and never recognized them.
At least concerning me those abbawannabees failed totally. A disaster. I didn't even realize they existed.

LOL - I even know that one! Wasn't there a German version as well?
But besides that these kind of songs only keep on reminding me of a weekly radio show each Saturday morning which accompanied me through my childhood. :D

For me it's not always obvious who has that 'ABBA wannabee feel'... at least, they won't appear too obvious to your average bystanders... but anything that does that 'anthemic' thing has 'ABBA' stamped all over it and I hear it in the Pet Shop Boys work for definite! Challenge me, anyone! But I can hear it. Ok, they don't look like them, yada yada yada..
OOPS  I think I can feel myself veering off topic... but sod it- it's relevant.
You've got your usual suspects- B.O.M, Bucks Fizz, etc but IMO (not very humble when it comes to all things ABBA) I really don't think ANY of them come close. ABBA were a class apart.

Yes, Abbagav- Fantasy Island was DEF an attempt at an ABBA feel and they pulled it off, I think!
Dana International's 'Diva' had it, too.
Another one was The Dooleys- 'Wanted'. Check it out everyone!!!! Now!!!!
DO IT!!!! Come on- no slacking- Limewire it!

drimnagh, why struggle with trying to download on limewire, when youtube have the song, with videos of ABBA to enhance the feel.

I remember when this record came out in '79, and it never struck me as sounding like ABBA at all. Different, louder vocals told me this is no way like ABBA, but I guess if you can imagine A&A singing the vocals instead, well maybe it is kinda like an ABBA song in it's construction.

Cheers for that Willie- if I had brains I'd be dangerous! :stupid:
I didn't mean that the Dooleys actually sounded like ABBA; more that they seemed to be striving towards that but IMO they didn't really succeed- far too shouty! But, yeah, if you swapped their warblings for Agnetha and Frida's dulcet tones it could've/would've sounded MUCH better!

Oh my god drimnagh - The Dooleys! I love 'em!
Wanted is such an incredible tune - it might sound daft but I think it sounds like a song that was just meant to be written...perfect verse/chorus - lovin' it! Bit too camp for ABBA though...
