    The Seven Daughters of Eve
To anyone who hasn't read this book, I highly recommend it. It's by Bryan Sykes, a world-famous geneticist and professor at Oxford University in England. I got it for Christmas and it's the best present I've ever received. Soon I'm sending my DNA for analysis to see which of the seven women I'm a descendent of.

So there are 7 individual "first women" that have been traced down? I thought only one existed, and she was referred to as Eve because all modern humans X chromosomes could be traced back to her...

It sounds like a good book. I will have to pick it up sometime...

(EDIT: From reading the reviews on Amazon, it sounds like Sykes has identified 33 women. Is Eve completely fictional or is there some basis to the Eve story [to me it doesn't make sense, one women could not give birth to all of mankind because of obvious reasons like inbreeding and not enough variety in the gene pool.]

By the way, how do you send your DNA? I'd also like to know who I come from.)

95% of modern-day Europeans can trace their descent down the maternal line (mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, etc.) to one of 7 women who lived in Europe in the hunter-gatherer era. I think the x-chromosome test tracing to one woman was a flaw. Mitochondrial DNA however, proved successful in every test.

The 33 women are in total, worldwide, but the book is about the 7 of them that lived in Europe. I think Eve is fictional, it's just a symbolic term for the "biblical effect." They couldn't all come from the same woman because their Mitochondrial DNA would be the same, and that wouldn't make sense because there were 7 (or 33 worldwide) distinct clusters.

As for the DNA, I'm finding out soon, my mom said that I can request a kit, I'll get on to that soon but I got some college things I have to straighten out first. When I get the details I'll post them, if you haven't beat me to it. Hope that helps.

It's good to get to know your bloodline... but to pursue that? I guess beliefs would have to be the motivation.
