I always thought of Pagan Metal as basically being Viking Metal............since...you know, Viking Metal bands sing about Pagan related things and half the Viking bands are Pagan Metal at the same time...like Kampfar.

Pagan Metal is a subgenre of Black Metal, mostly a mix of raw Black Metal and accoustic folklore, also mixed clean and rough vocals.
The themes are about paganism (celts, germans,...), pre christian peoples.
A subgenre of Pagan Metal is Viking Metal (Bathory, Falkenbach, Einherjer,...), but it has advanced into another direction and has become now an own genre
Bands like Vintersorg or Borknagar can't be definitely categorized, cause they mostly sing about nature in general.
Examples for Pagan Metal bands are: Suidakra, Menhir, Ancalagon
