'I Do, I Do, I Do'....Not In Full In 'Mamma Mia'
Hello,
According to today's UK 'Paper, 'The Daily Express'
'I Do, I Do, I do...' will not be used in full in the 'Mamma Mia'
Movie.

Here is the Article:,

Mamma Mia! Director says 'I don't' to hit

TO MAMMA MIA! fans, Abba's song I Do I Do I Do I Do I Do
(dubbed The Wedding Song) is the perfect way to end the musical.
It is the track the cast sing when two of the show's stars tie the knot.
But it has all but been dropped from Mamma Mia! The Movie, which
stars Meryl Streep, Julie Walters, and Pierce Brosnan.
ABBA's former guitarist Lasse Wellander, 55 - who plays on the film's
soundtrack - reveals: " You'll hear short bursts of the song at the end,
I gather. For some reason it won't be played in full."
The reason, says our man in the sprangly jumpsuit, appears to be
director Phyllida Lloyd, who is not keen on the single - released by Abba
in 1975. She has also axed Knowing Me, Knowing You.
For those who can't wait for the film, out next year, musician Lasse
and some of ABBA's original backing band are premiering a special
concert called The Abba Show at the Royal Albert Hall in London
on September 26th.

END OF ARTICLE

So, 'I Do...has been severely edited for the Flim,
& 'Knowing Me, Knowing You', 'Thank You For The Music',
& 'Under Attack', have been removed from it entirely.

So far, they have all only been replaced with,
'When All Is Said & Done'.

I guess it is too much to ask that Benny & Bjorn write some 'Fake'
ABBA-like Songs for the Film - New Songs? It was done for many
Broadway Musicals, when they were made into Films - including
'Grease', etc. With the 'Mamma Mia!' Film, more seems to be taken
away, than is added.....

That's unconscionable. It's going to wind up being Muriel's Wedding at this rate - a few bars of a few songs here and there.........

Why make a musical based on ABBA songs if you don't include the ABBA songs? It's not as if MM has a Shakespeare-esque plot that will carry an entire movie- unless I'm wrong, the only reason why the musical is popular in the first place is the music.........

Oh god. Where are the boys? Bring in the boys. We need the boys to restore sanity before the whole thing ends up being something they didn't envision at all and are ashamed to be associated with.

Can't understand this!!

I thought the final word rested with B & B why has Phyllida Got so much to say. OK she is the Director BUT she can't go cutting all of these great songs from the Movie.

UGGH!
I agree....I do not understand all of the cutting of the songs originally appearing in the broadway musical for the movie, unless they absolutley REPLACE the cut songs with other appropriate songs to fit the re-written script.

There are many other great ABBA songs that would fit well into the Mama Mia storyline, why not just pick a few more to replace the ones that get cut? There can't be too many songs in a musical....that is what one is, is it not???? Are they going to fill the story with so much talking and "fluff" that there will be very little music at all?

I agree with all of you...where are the two guys who have the __alls to tell the director what songs will and will not be in the film?!?

Pity. The crowd will be singing "I DONT I DONT I DONT I DONT I DONT like this movie!" if they keep doing this.

First of all: B&B are very much involved in this project, especially from a music point of view. They do not cut songs or add songs without the permission of B&B.

Second of all: it's all rumours... we know nothing official about any songs that are being scrapped or added. Except for When All Is Said And Done being added and maybe two or three songs being axed.

There are good reasons to do this. A musical is not the same thing as a movie. A movie is all about image. What they are trying to do is to get the best songs for the best images and scenes for the film. Some songs work better on film compared to the theatre and viceversa.

I find it a very interesting and creative process. I would have hated it if they'd just copied the musical exactly. It's something different!

Well let's just wait and see what happens. There's bound to be people who like the film and those who don't. Lets keep an open mind until its released.

Many of the songs were incomplete in the stage version, including I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do.

I agree
Yes, many songs in the musical stage production are indeed tidbits of the originals......

Also, I may have overreacted a bit above. Twenty plus songs in a musical are a LOT of songs to sing in full verse during a movie which should not exceed two hours in length.

The stage production has over 20 songs, and it alone takes up two hours, so, it does seem logical that they may need to "weed out" a few in order to build on the story line a little. If they add quite a bit of "story or talking scenes like Grease has, and still has over twenty songs, the show would be quite long. Grease's success was not just for the songs, but the story and "filler" that was not on the stage version made the movie a bit more entertaining, such as adding Franki Avalon and adding modern dancing and songs such as "Hopelessly devoted to you"....and You're the one that I want", and the "Grease" title song...all three HUGE hits in the UK and the USA.....and not in the Broadway original stage production.

Maybe, there will be a NEW ABBA song introduced and they will try to win an Oscar for Best Original Song for a Musical!!!! THAT would be fantastic!!! :D Can't win that Academy award with a previously released song!

Well, I'm sure that B&B have melodies lying around that were written during the ABBA days, but eventually never used. Like Crush On You for example, a melody written around 1979 for ABBA, but never recorded. They're now recording that with BAO. I'm sure there's more like that out there, maybe suitable for Mamma Mia! - The Movie.

There would be no point in dredging up unused "ABBA" melodies for the Mamma Mia! movie. http://abbaworld.wordpress.com/2007/03/30/not-like-that/

Nice column Ian! But to be honest, I do not find it impossible that a melody that was originally conceived (and discarded) during the ABBA years could crop up in Mamma Mia! I mean, if the melody was never recorded and was just stuck in Benny's (and Björn's) head, who could prove that in fact it wasn't written specifically for Mamma Mia! - The Movie in 2007?

Of course, they could never tell that the melody was in fact old, but still.

To be honest, I don't think a new melody will pop up. I do wonder if Just Like That might be tried for this movie again, but I'm not very hopeful.

We'll see.

SO.....
Oh well....

Ian, your llink to the "Tell-all" article is interesting, but, it too is just a person's opinion on what the producers (ANY of them) may end up doing for the Mama Mia movie. The need for additional material may be felt by them after viewing screenings prior to release when they find they may NEED something different....or filler or whatever! There may not be a "need" for any new material, but there may just be some afterall...for whatever reason!
Good thing we all have open minds here, huh?

I think it's fairly bizarre if it's true that I do I do I do is to be dropped from the musical. It's one of those songs, like Chiquitita in the stage show that has that immediate sense of recognition when you hear it and one just has to laugh, in a nice way, at it being so typically perfect for the moment.....M
