ABBA and mini atomium
Last November friends of mine found an ABBA picture on the Record Fair in Utrecht. We began to wonder where it was taken.

There's an Atomium in Brussels (Belgium):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomium

But this looks like a mini atomium...

Do you know where this picture was taken?

Wasn't it at "Mini-Europe" (1974), the park at the foot of the real Atomium?
http://www.minieurope.com/
Or nearby?

Just as this pic?

I also thought it was in Mini-Europe. So, I went to this parc near the real Atomium in Brussels two years ago. But no, I did not see the worldglobe or the mini-atomium, the two pictures with Abba on it.
You can visit the real Atomium inside the building and there you find a kind of the mini-atomium. Now, behind glass. You can not tough it. It's very simalar with Abba's picture.
And so, where can we find the worldglobe then?

to make a bit of promotion :)

Mini Europe is in the shadow of the Atomium
and is the only park where you can have a whitlestop tour around Europe in a few short hours. A truly unique voyage ! Stroll amid the typical ambiance of the most beautiful towns of the Old Continent. The incomparable chimes of Big Ben welcome you to the heart of London. The gondolas and mandolins will invite you to discover the charms of Venice. Follow the T.G.V. from Paris to the other end of France. You can make the models work yourself : the eruption of Vesuvius, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the bullfight in Seville and many more… In total 300 models and sites in a quite unequalled craftmanship. Also don’t forget to visit the European Space full of interactive multimedia games.
:D

I doubt these pictures were taken at Mini-Europa in Brussels as this theme-parc didn't open it's doors until 1989 (acc to Wikipedia).

ikkedirk - 05.03.2011, 18:30

Hi Luc and all :)

Mini europe as a park didn't exist yet as far as I know .. but at that time there where already a couple of mini buildings.

ABBA performed in 'Chansons à la carte' in the middle of May Waterloo and Ring Ring ... I guess that those pictures where taken before the recording of the show .... ABBA's sightseeing. The studio's are not that far away.

Joe - 26.06.2011, 21:55

And a new story.

Meanwhile I'm convinced the pics were taken in Saarbrücken in Germany, not in Brussels.
I found the pic with the Atomium labeled as showing "Gulliver World" (Gulliver Welt) in the German-French Garden. This part of the park is old and features 67 landmarks from all over the world. See this pic with the mini-Atomium
http://www.schlemmerblock.de/restaurants_img/847/img_847_9.jpg

And here is an old postcard showing the globe and the statue.
Unfortunately it's very small. I enlarged it and you can recognize both.

They've been in Saarbrücken for the show "Starparade" on May 16.

This is realy amazing!
Finally someone found the place 'Abba at the mini-Atomium'!
I'm so happy for that.
Thank you so much Joe for this information!
Gulliver Welt seems still exist and it's a great place to visit as an Abba-realted place.
Every year when I'm going to Switzerland, Saarbrücken is on my way...
There must be more information of ABBA in Saarbrücken.
Who is the photographer of these pictures from Abba in Guliver Welt. Maybe it's Bubi Heilleman?
I know he took many picture of Abba in Waterloo/Belgium. But so far as I know not at the real big Atomium in Brussels. This is a pity. Only pictures at the Wellington Museum and behind Abba the Lion of Waterloo...

waterloo wrote: Gulliver Welt seems still exist and it's a great place to visit as an Abba-realted place.
Yes, it does still exist, but according to some reports I found on the net it's not in a very good condition, in opposite to the rest of the park area which gets "updated" all the time.

Don't know about the photographer (yet). I also don't know in which mag or so the pics appeared first. It should be rather easy to trace it down then.

Re: ABBA and mini atomium

waterloo - 28.09.2011, 17:06

I visited Gullivers Welt/Saarbrücken in the first week of Sept. 2011.
Great to see the mini-atomium, the world globe and the statue of liberty is still there. But the condition is not so good anymore of in the seventies when Abba was there.
The world globe lost his red colour and is no longer stay on the ground. This is very good to see at the intrance of the park.
Is there someone who knows more about Abba's visiting in Saarbrücken in 1974. And I'm still looking for the photographer of these pictures in the park.

Re: ABBA and mini atomium

Joe - 28.09.2011, 18:01

^^One picture is used on the pages of some ARD stations (Starparade was a ZDF show though!), but there neither is any name of a photographer nor of an agency. It's from dpa/Picture Alliance, but they don't offer any public access to their database. Anyway, haven't seen it in any other agency's database yet. Same with any magazine. Seems it was used rather seldomly.

Btw if you want to visit it, hurry up:

Google translation wrote: Gulliver's World is facing disaster

Soon comes the end of Gulliver's World. The lease for the land expires on 30 April 2013. Then the operator-company still has a year to reduce the Gulliver's World. Then the city will also create a playground and renature the powder stream. (Published on 29/07/2011)

Old Saarbrücken. Sadly the Seven Years Vladimir looks at the model railway in the Gulliver's World in German-French Garden (DFG). Vladimir has just flipped a coin in the blue box, which is to put the car in gear. But nothing happens.
Only when an employee of the Gulliver's World by train gives a gentle nudge, he burst rolls - past the London Tower Bridge, the Prater Ferris Wheel and the Statue of Liberty. Because their replicas - at scales 1:25 or 1:33 - line the route. Vladimir and his friend Franz look behind the train happily.
But Gulliver's World has in store for the two other little disappointment. Right the first structural model, the Stephansdom, the once beautiful coat is no longer visible on the roof. Only fractions of a proud eagle left.
The Pharaohs figures on the model of the temple of Abu Simbel have indeed seen recently fresh paint. But at the edge peeks out the wire that holds the structure. On the Pont du Gard, some plywood solved. The Tower Bridge stands on dry land, and the ship-model system has been shut down long ago. Perhaps because there is still water in the pool barely.

The ravages of time

The grass around the majority of the 62 attractions Although trimmed, the models themselves but obviously gnaws and the inexorable passage of time. Those who wanted to curb that would need a lot of work, time and money.
While walking is the observer clear: the era when young and old flocked enthusiastically in the Gulliver's World, there to admire the images of legendary landmarks, is long gone. Gulliver's World in the DFG's just too few fans. The company, which has leased the land from the city, in order to engage the Gulliver's World, has only a salaried employee - and committed helpers when needed.

According to city spokesman Thomas Blug, the city has made it clear in 2009 that they will not extend the lease with the operator company - because the city believes the Gulliver's World has no future. The contract will expire on 30 April 2013. "There were many complaints from the public about the state of Gulliver's World," says Blug. After expiration of the lease, the lessee-operator company have a year to vacate the premises. Then there was a playground would be built. Also wanted the Green Office renature the powder stream flowing there. The concept for the transformation is to be presented to the City Council, which must decide on the financing.

The park is closed since October. Those interested can still do some kind of a virtual tour with this gallery. No ABBA pictures in it though. In case you wondered, you also can notice that the numbers on the globe in the picture above refer to the individual buildings. ;-)
