What can you say about Jimmy Paige? As a guitar player that bridges the acoustic and the electric world Jimmy really knows how to walk that bridge of sighs. He’s one of the most versatile players in the world. His style of music is so expansive – it’s as if he’s always got a foot in the classics and a foot in the blues. There’s a duality that that I’ve emulated ever since I’ve played guitar.
I don’t think Heart would be the same band without Jimmy (and Robert and Led Zeppelin as a whole). Their total influence – on Ann as a singer, on me as a player and on us as writers. There was a whole Tolkien, poetic, mysterious magical thing that the band had going on. All the great dissonances that Jimmy would put into songs and phrases – things that were really off the beaten track musically for rock’n’roll.
I saw Led Zeppelin opening up for the Fifth Dimension in Seattle. We’d gone there to see some other bands, but heard of Zeppelin since they’d been played on the radio a little bit. We saw the show, and I was probably all of 13 and it was really: “Oh my god, these guys are really sexual.” All the girls around us were going crazy and Ann and myself were just a bit shocked. We didn’t really know what to think. But I went away, got their album and listened to it some more. And that was that.
Jimmy’s always been a very enigmatic figure – a lot about the way he plays is who he is. He conjures when he plays and really bring a lot of magic to it. Some would say black magic, but I never cared for that part as much as how great the music was. All the stories you hear later about the dark side of Jimmy just adds to the enigma. Controversy is something, especially in rock or pop, that can be attractive – the danger of it.
I think that is important to think that Jimmy did a lot iconic playing and producing long before he ever ran into Robert Plant. Both her and John Paul Jones are very capable of reading music, writing music, doing string charts and the like. There’s a lot of formal musicianship and capability going on which you don’t automatically think about when you hear Led Zeppelin. They really knew what they were doing. They knew all the rules and then they break them all.
