ALAN “FLUFF” FREEMAN DIES
Veteran DJ Alan "Fluff" Freeman has died aged 79.
The former BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2 presenter, whose "Not 'arf" catchphrase made him a household name, had been living in a nursing home in Twickenham after being diagnosed with arthritis.
He was born in 1927 in Melbourne, Australia, and joined the BBC in 1960 where his Pick of the Pops programme made him one of the UK's top DJs. His last show was on 21 April 2000, when he played John Leyton's 1960 hit "Johnny Remember Me". It had been the first of many No 1 hit records he had championed during nearly 50 years of broadcasting.
He presented the BBC Radio 1 Rock Show from 1973 to 1978, and later from 1989 to 1993.
Zeppelin fans will remember him for his introduction at the final night of Earls Court on May 25th 1975 with the immortal opening “Good evening music lovers….I want to tell you something…we are here tonight because you and I have great taste…that is for sure…Music lovers…. ladies and gentlemen…here is Led Zeppelin”
