ABBA Number Ones DVD ~ the best bit
AMAZON came up trumps and ABBA Number Ones DVD dropped through my letter box yesterday, needless to say I watched it through last night as I was keen to see the Extras and make sure the rest played OK.

The best bit for me was the I do, I do ...., SOS and Waterloo from Momarkedet in Norway. It was such a joyous performance from them all you cannot help but smile and when watching this :D

Such a contrast to their obvious deep emotional tensions and the visible sadness in their eyes in the next clips from the Late Late Breakfast show. I cannot help but admire them for carrying on for as long as they did. It cannot have been easy.

Number Ones DVD
Just got mine this morning! Who were the two plonkers front row during Waterloo? They looked like they were really grooving!

Playing the SOS part off the "Extras" section, lovely and clear, a bit of hiss though in the soundtrack, could they not have fixed that>? Still, next to watch the Late Late Breakfast Show bits coming up...

I Have A Dream...
Now playing I Have A Dream, lovely picture, shame they didn't get this into the studio and give it a stereo sound! Tut tut! Lazy Universal! It's easy to do! They are singing to playback all that needed to be done is to blend from mono applause to stereo and then back out! What a wasted opportunity for this clip, what with high tech TV's now that can play Dolby Digital etc! Nice cold ending though for I Have A Dream... Under Attack, same thing here, mono sound! Will it have the cold ending...(adding as I look and listen...)...yeah cold ending Under Attack here too!

I have that Under Attack on BetaMax video(then converted to VHS years later), from the actual transmission but it had corrupted over the years so nice to have it clearer.

I wonder what Agnetha said to Benny during the break between choruses towards the end of the song...

"Hey Benny, just one more performance on Nojesmaskinen and then that's it for me, they don't buy our singles in the UK anymore so to hell with it, at least Spain will give us a number one with Under Attack"

Overall presentation of the actual DVD show is nice, I like the record covers at the beginning of each song.

They use the saxophone version video of Ring Ring, so that's nice.

The actual DVD box and cover is a bit dark, it just did not hit me when I went scouting around in Woolworth or HMV in St. Albans. I had to look pretty hard with my old 43 year old eyes!

So all in all, for £8.99 from hmv.co.uk via Jersey, not bad value, I certainly would not pay anymore.

So Universal, where are these other shows and clips you are keeping from us?

Diego

Yes you would have thought with the technology available today the sound quality could have been better, even made into surround ~ now THAT would have been nice.

Gosh those "plonkers" as you called them brought back memories :? . Dance moves were different in those days and you seemed to have more space on the floor to do your own thing too  and no it wasn't me IF ONLY!!!

Why no stereo to I Have A Dream and Under Attack!
Just added some more observations to my above post.

Well the stereo thing, for God's sake, I manage to do it, many people here have seen and heard my efforts, why couldn't Universal get someone in to add stereo to the tracks? It just takes some imagination!

Sorely disappointed with I Have A Dream and Under Attack, just a few hours work in the studio at Universal and this could have been perfect.

Agnetha looks F***ng gorgeous in Under Attack! If I were straight...!

I did not expect the Waterloo clip to be stereo as A) It was sung live B) The BBC back then were not stereo broadcasters C) Tampering with it might have spoilt it.

Just looked at the booklet, you need a microscope the read the text! Or it it my 43 year old eyes again!

Oh Maxi,
You know I am hopeless when it comes to all matters ABBA, after all these years they still give me a buzz everytime I hear them or play their music or watch them. They have been and still are a big part of my life. Mad I know, no one ever doubts my loyalty to them, I defend them to the death, and I'll probably love them until the day I pass from this world to whatever comes next! But I still do not see myself as "sweaty and obsessed", just a bit daft!

NUMBER ONES ...
Just got round to playing "Extras" off the DVD version of Number Ones (I skipped buying the CD version). I quite like the slideshow with the single covers going across the screen, I am sure that can be played in one long clip rather than it stopping each single time and returning back to the slideshow menu. I haven't worked out how to "play all" so that all the singles scroll across in one play.

Still, disappointed in the Under Attack and I Have A Dream being in mono. But I have fixed that now, I have made an additional "supplementary DVD" to go in with the box alongside the main DVD, on this extra one I did, I made I Have/Under Attack stereo and made my own menu to match the main DVD so it is now like a little sister DVD in the box with the other one!

Re: ABBA Number Ones DVD ~ the best bit

Gniblett - 24.11.2006, 17:42

I would have liked to have seen the space devoted to more clips of ABBA's TV appearances rather than the slideshow of all the singles covers

Number Ones...
Well,
That too...A nice number one recording from Spain (Chiquitita sung at least twice in Spain in Spanish to my knowledge) or USA for Dancing Queen, they must have performed it in the US and even the big expanse in space would not have even have had to shell out to have that performance converted seeing it would have been in NTSC anyways. Oh the list could go on!

Re: ABBA Number Ones DVD ~ the best bit

imstillalive - 25.11.2006, 15:41

I have to agree with Gniblett, I watched the slideshow and after a few mins clicked off onto the other videos...bit of a waste of disk space.

Loved the clips from TOTP and Hei Sveis! they really looked as if they were having fun.

Hope universal has some more goodies like that up their sleave.

GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't bother playing the DVD only the extras

Agnetha look stunning in the SOS clip from Norway, I have never seen these preformances before, They are worth the price of the DVD alone, I also enjoyed ABBA performing Waterloo on TOTP's from 1974.

Also enjoyed I Have A Dream & Under Attack.

One can only imagine that in fututre DVD releases Universal will releases little gems to tempt us to buy the product, Hey I will if there are clips like that.

The preformance from 1975 from Norway looks as if it could have been taken yesterday.

Unseen Footage
Only reason I bought the DVD version was for those exact "extras", now "the great expanse in space" could so easily release "ABBA-The Unseen Footage" DVD and we would all shut our faces.

philzone - 30.11.2006, 04:22

sounds like this DVD is worth it for the extras. are the rest the same videos we already have on Gold or Definitive Collection? i was hoping the whole thing would be alternative videos made up from television appearances. still, i feel a need to buy it.

Re: ABBA Number Ones DVD ~ the best bit

Maxi-saxi - 30.11.2006, 04:47

Deigo,

I feel the same way you and many other do, Universal will not release A DVD or Dvd's with previously unseen footage together because it comes down to MONEY MONEY MONEY.

The Buggers know full well we fanatics will buy a DVD with a few hidden gems on it as well as the other clips, this way they can give us something maybe 2 or 3 times a year.

If I were in Charge of Universal Like you everything On ABBA, Frida & Agnetha would have been released yesterday, am I Mean EVERYTHING.

But back to the point the extras especally the Norway stuff is so clear and to see the Girls is just wonderful.

Maxi-saxi

I only wish they would have had the Interview on the Late Late Breakfast Show with the members of ABBA from memory it was good.

skm - 30.11.2006, 18:51

 Despite the advertisments on tv, when I went to the record store today, they only had the cds and not the dvds. Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy? I thought the cd came with the dvd and the dvd is also sold on its own. Even more strange, there were 2 types of ABBA No1s. One is a single CD with all the 18 songs. The other is a Limited Edition double cd. One cd has all the 18 songs. The 2nd cd has songs from number 1 albums like Me and I, Our Last Summer, King Has Lost His Crown etc.

Re: ABBA Number Ones DVD ~ the best bit

Didi - 30.11.2006, 19:05

I know, it is all getting very silly!

I was looking through the HMV web site, there are
Millenium Edition,
Limited Editions,
The Remasters,
The Name Of The Game,
18 Hits,
15 Hits DVD,
Absolute ABBA,
Gold,
More Gold,
Pure Gold,
Forever Gold,
Mas Gold,
Bonus Tracks Editions,
Number Ones CD
Number Ones DVD, the Number Ones CD has songs that were not number ones (unless you count them as being "in" a number one album!)

"Next will be: ABBA-Turn of the Century",
"We All Love ABBA Again & Again Subtitled (On and On and On!)",
"ABBA Again",
"ABBA Songs But In A Different Order"
"ABBA The Songs We All Have But Here They Are Again What The Hell You're All Idiots For Buying Them Ha Ha From The Great Expanse In Space"

hehehe

Makes my own "ABBA REVISITED" ones sound actually different and worth having a look at! At least they have "different" tracks and are of actual INTEREST! Not one of my tracks are a re-hash under a different title!

Hehe,
Diego

Re: ABBA Number Ones DVD ~ the best bit

iancee - 30.11.2006, 21:21

Pure Gold is a music folio, not a compilation CD.

Re: ABBA Number Ones DVD ~ the best bit

Didi - 30.11.2006, 21:23
Oh well
Well,
"Come on,Gimme a break willya!"

I was just so flummoxed by the amount of "this compilation and that compilation", one must have slipped into my list, as you can tell, I don't take it all too seriously!

Diego

Re: ABBA Number Ones DVD ~ the best bit

iancee - 30.11.2006, 21:40

And Absolute ABBA is an unofficial CD containing interviews and no music.

Re: ABBA Number Ones DVD ~ the best bit

iancee - 30.11.2006, 22:36

Nah, not at all, just pointing out some things that don't fall into the category.

But if you're interested, there have been at least 38 different compilations or collections since 1990, not counting re-releases or different covers and titles in different countries, or various versions of the 8 studio albums.

Re: ABBA Number Ones DVD ~ the best bit

Maxi-saxi - 01.12.2006, 00:36

Diego,

Yes as you know I e-maild Mia at Universal and I did get a reply, She stated very clearly there will be future releases, exciting ones on DVD as well. So one can only imagine. I asked for A Agnetha release and why there was not one forcoming. She told me that Warner were working on a Agnetha release and she was quite sue of it.

Also I suggest to her a DVD celebrating the 40 years working together of B & B containing interviews a short history and a DVD of Clips from artists singing songs
Chess
Gemini
Josifin Nielson
Kristina
Helen.

She took note of my suggestion.

So who knows

As I said if we get gems like this on any DVD release I will be buying.

Re: ABBA Number Ones DVD ~ the best bit

Michel - 02.12.2006, 09:49

I received the DVD yesterday and i only bought it for the extra's. I never saw ABBA on TOTP in '74 and in Norway '75. I must say it's a shame that there's so less extra's; why not include ABBA's last perfomance (and interview) on Nöjesmaskinen?
In the booklet there's one mistake; they write that Waterloo was a number 1 in Holland. I thought it "only" made it to number 2. Anyone knows more?

Greetings,

Michel

Re: ABBA Number Ones DVD ~ the best bit

Didi - 02.12.2006, 09:56
More extras!
Yes I agree, a bit low on "extras" considering there is so much out there still not available to us in full quality! A darn shame.

It just shows if they set their mind to it, they can do research and find stuff of interest! So they really need a good researcher to go full time and fly the world negotiating the deals with the individual TV stations that perhaps have them lying collecting dust in their archives.

Diego :D

Re: ABBA Number Ones DVD ~ the best bit

Maxi-saxi - 03.12.2006, 03:22

Diego, Its Money,

They are going to spin out these instead of giving us all things at once.

Because they know if there is enought extras on a DVD we will buy it.
I know it's a pain up the behind, I for one like you can't see the point in letting these super television & interviews preformances just sitting there, They should be put on Dvd and selling Surely these people at Universal and BBC and other places must relize that a group who can sell about 400 million CD's and videos isn't a risk.

I mean it would be fantastic to see a DVD or a DVD set full of Television preformances/interviews from Europe/USA/Ausrtalia etc.

I don't see there mind set at times. I think they all need a bomb put under there backsides given a good wake up call.

Re: ABBA Number Ones DVD ~ the best bit

Didi - 03.12.2006, 11:14
They are just so inconsistent..
They are fools to themselves and they have a very strange policy regarding "pirates". One moment they are trying to take people to court as in the well publicised "court action" taken against a certain Australian web site, they relented when they saw the absolute horror and dismay it caused the ABBA community!

Next moment they are saying they will do all sorts of DVDs with rarities and then when they do, you get two or three bits tacked on the end of all their hits yet again.

A kick in the goolies would be in order to get them to listen! Look what they have done to The Beatles, all reworked and back in the charts in a high position!

You are right. "Waterloo" was a number 2 (for 4 weeks) in the Netherlands.
And the performance at the Late, Late Breakfast show included on the DVD was taped on 11th December 1982 and was in fact ABBA's last performance as a group.
The performance at Nöjesmaskinen was taped on 19th November. It would be nice if that had been included as well. From what I've read the interview on that show was quite good.

Nöjesmaskinen Under Attack...
Hades,
I have a clip of Nöjesmaskinen but alas it is not complete, just the 1st verse and the chorus as part of a show they also did with a Swedish language interview indespersed within footage of Under Attack. I wonder, does anyone have it TV quality in full out there?

Diego

Re: ABBA Number Ones DVD ~ the best bit

Maxi-saxi - 04.12.2006, 04:33

Hades,

I would like to see also a Dvd with Interviews and preformances on Like the ones you have mentioned. I can remember the Interview on The Late Late Breakfast Show it was funny and very good, It would be nice to have a interview like this.

Hopefully one day Universal will release something, as ABBA did so many great Interviews on Television, especally in the USA when they did promotional work in the earky '70's.

Hummer3 - 08.12.2006, 18:01

OK I got the dvd last night and I love the extra portions. That Norwegian show is a classic. And it was such a contrast with the late late breakfast show. Kinda like they grew up ie got more mature in a few short years.

BUT for those of you who haven't looked at the videos - run back and look at the videos. It looks like universal cleaned up the videos. They are so clear now. Compared to the definitive collection these videos are much better quality. So now we need a remastered cleaned up definitive collection. :D
