Tweaking reality with Photoshop - what is your opinion?
Hello everyone,

When my ABBA fandom was rekindled again in 2001 and I started to look for ABBA pages in the web, it was like a new venture. So many unseen pictures, so many individual stories about ABBA and the ABBA members, a vast number of all kinds of fan pages, memorabilia and stuff.

Well, then I ran into fan fiction, at least I think that tweaking pictures is some kind of fan fiction. I will post here a few examples for your review and I would like to know your opinion. Is it OK to enhance pictures?

Here is an example of an enhanced one:

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/nytorp/images/ag1972b.jpg

What about colouring black and white pictures like the next one:

http://www.ekero.plus.com/Images/abba76colour1small.jpg

Or then a total fantasy image?

http://www.ekero.plus.com/Images/agmarilyn1d.jpg

Are these ethically correct in your opinion? Or are they just pieces of art?
In some ways these could be seen as remixes of themes exactly in the same way as songs are nowadays being remixed.

So, your thoughts on these?

Interesting!

I have seen these images (and lots of these more) at a site and I have to say that I am not impressed at all. I do not care for them because they look (and are) fake but I guess you could see it as a form of art.

But it is not my kind of art...

Re: Tweaking reality with Photoshop - what is your opinion?

abbascots - 04.11.2006, 19:27

Hi Sinikka i love the one of all Abba members,To me the Agnetha one is a wee bit too sexy for me but i know loads that would like it  But i see no harm in them i would say its most certainaly ART
Regards johnsteven :)

Re: Tweaking reality with Photoshop - what is your opinion?

Anonymous - 04.11.2006, 19:37

Hi both,

Yes, I agree with you both. I was very upset when I saw the pictures at first, but nowadays I see them more as pieces of art and even well-done art. This is quite funny

http://www.ekero.plus.com/Images/fragxena1c.jpg

Anne

PS. But there are limits to art, too. As long as the person in the picture is treated with dignity and respect, it is fine, but there are also ways to go overboard. I am still trying to find one that I found crossed the border of good taste.

Now that one is stunning sinikka i really like this one i have even saved it ! Thanks johnsteven :D

Re: Tweaking reality with Photoshop - what is your opinion?

Regina - 04.11.2006, 19:56

All very interesting pictures  But the very first one of Agnetha from her early days (in red pullover) seems to be a true one or am I wrong?

Anyway, I personally prefer to search for real rare pictures. I am not so much interested in those fakes ones. But you are all probably right - they are kind of art!

aggie-fan - 04.11.2006, 21:32

Hi everyone.

I think that photo shopping is soo cool, i love the different pics of abba or agnetha. like if we never had anyone who would photo shop abba in 2004 and 2005 together. you wouldn't be able to see them together if we never had a person do the photoshopping.
i sometimes use my photoshop, i fix agnetha's make-up etc. or in like 2005 pictures, i fix her hair color, well everything. i think its just fun. and a good hobby. BUT. then again nothing beats the real photo of the abba members.

Lutfi - 04.11.2006, 21:53

Hi Sinikka

If picture show corectly ABBA members, then it's art.

But Xena picture is not art because it is not present Frida and Agnetha corectly.

ABBA members are peacefull humans,Frida and Agnetha never is not like to strike enyone.

also I have some ABBA art picture shows, but my show is not distroy ABBA image.

Re: Tweaking reality with Photoshop - what is your opinion?

johnny59 - 04.11.2006, 22:35

Interesting topic, Anne.

To say it first, I really like Andy's site, he's a Photoshop wizard! Sure it's a piece of art and I don't think it's not ethical. Look at his pics, he adores the girls, especially Netta, you can see it.

Personally I would say Agnetha doesn't really need to be merged with other women, not even the legendary Marilyn, she's just perfect the way she is. (Counts for Frida as well, of course.) Nevertheless I enjoy the pics.

Another question is how we find it what the professional photoshop manipulations are about. I'm talking about the official "refurbishing".

Look at Warner's MCB photo session, for example. On some pictures Agnetha looks like as if time would have stood still since 1985. It's stunning, but is it true?

If you look at her in the 2004 TV interviews you will find her look much more natural. Of course still beautiful and that gorgeous smile still can make my heart melt within milliseconds, but not so artificially refurbished.

I know that even the young and beautiful chicks of today's music scene are computer-optimized these days, but in contrary to the pics discussed above I would like to initiate a debate if this is the right thing to do - because in this case it is not intended to be obvious that it is a manipulated reality.

And fan fiction, Anne? Oh, this can get weird, right? Can you imagine that, as an old Trekkie fan, I have written a piece called "Star Trek - The Final Episode"? It features Agnetha as a specialist for mental diseases.

But that would really be off-topic now. LOL.

Re: Tweaking reality with Photoshop - what is your opinion?

Anonymous - 04.11.2006, 22:43

Hi Johnny,

Yes, I have had similar thoughts about refurbishing and enhancing pictures. If we go a bit further along this path of thinking, one could ask if the person that you want to enhance, is not good enough as such. Add a little bit of white to her hair, enhance the complexion by a degree or two, paint the eyebrows a bit darker and so on, and voilá, you have created a woman of your dreams.

Have you Johnny noticed (why do I even ask :? ) how Agnetha's eyes are asymmetrical and the other eye seems to be a bit higher when she smiles? No matter how beautiful she is, there are some features on her face that make her look unique, and also very Swedish. What troubles me in many of those photoshop pictures is that the Scandinavian features of her face have been faded out. Well, I don't know how to explain that in words....

But yes, I agree that enhancing pictures can be a two-ended sword.

Agnetha in a Star-Trek episode? Yes, I think that I can imagine you writing something like that. I won't even mention what I have created long, long time ago with one of my friends. At the time I did not realise that we both were writing fan fiction.

>If we go a bit further along this path of thinking, one could ask if the person
>that you want to enhance, is not good enough as such.

That's exactly the point. I sometimes ask myself if it adds to Agnetha's shyness. That she thinks she can't compete with the shiny-tweaked covers and with the picture of her that people have on their minds.

That's why I like the Lotta Brome interview so much. She looks like a woman from next door and still so cute and natural.

and yes i agree with jonny, in 2004 agnetha was interviewed and yes she had wrinkles, well thats natural for a 54 year old. and then looking at the pictures for my coloring book and some how the wrinkles were gone. i dont know, i like both. natural, and photo shopped. Shes beautiful either way.

I really don't know. I have found it in another forum as well. I wish I knew!

Re: Tweaking reality with Photoshop - what is your opinion?

Bobbysbrother - 05.11.2006, 10:13

Well, I think that a too much enthusiastic use of Photoshop (in this case from a fan) can even ridicule an original picture sometimes, I like it when it can improve its quality respecting the original concept but most of the times, when surreal fantasy takes over, I find the final effect a bit too corny and improbable for my liking... Like wanting to change the ABBA members' look into something more "nowadays" by giving the girls, for instance, the Jessica Simpson's hairdo or something... I tend to say "Argh!" in those cases! Let the ABBA Goddesses be as they are (I agree with Johnny, Agnetha doesnt need a "Marilyn status". She already is an icon of her own!)
But ok, the fantasy image can be fun sometimes (lol, look at Benny & Frida as The Avengers >> http://www.ekero.plus.com/Images/frbnyavengers1.jpg ) but better not go too far with it...

For an ABBA photoshopped treatment I recommend >> http://www.abbapicoftheweek.co.uk/gallery/index.php I really love some of those works!

I personally don`t like photoshop pictures so very much. I prefer real pictures.
Agnetha always looks beautiful. I like the natural photos of her very much.I also love to see her in the Lotta Brome interview, she looks very natural.
But the "MCB" pictures are very nice, too.

Hi Jhonny

(topic is update)

I remove this link of Agnetha picture. I'm never not like to change original pictures.
Regarding spong notice ,this crown are not real ,I understand.
I'm is not accept pictures, which are changed body of ABBA members.
Photoshop works must upon original picture body, you may correct colors ,you can give angle of view etc. But change or add to body any article o9r remove, for me is not acceptable. You not be found any my picture different from original.
Otherwise people will lost things of ABBA reality.
Original ABBA pictures are very natural and good, only quality of them must remaster. (No Marlyn Monro etc, Agnetha are most beatiful and natural) ABBA members pictures is fantastic but in future they must colect to digital from original negative films.

Kind Regards

hello

how do you improve on what i consider perfection?
you do not. therefore i do not think these pictures enhance.
and i'm sorry , but the crowns look silly. sorry.

my favourite picture of AGGIE (Johnny's first on his second page) is my favourite picture of her of all time ,
but i think it looks better in black and white.

now there's a thought: turn the colour ones to b&w.

Anne Nice topic..you chose !
I for one love seeng the photoshoped images that come from Pic of the week ..its a gem to see old abba pictures given a fresh breath of life but then I am an artist of sorts so I tend to see them through an artists eyes.

I also am a huge fan of Andys images and the fantasy ones and coloured ones are superb to me and alot of fun.
I see them as a work of love and art and a great tribute to abba because of the time spent and effort involved to create them all.

I think they give us fans a but of fantasy for the abba members images just like seeing them in cartoos such as Happy Hawaii or in a cimic book form.
its all art..
I have some very cool fantasy images of the abba members which were done for fun just for me but most I could not show on he internet because they are a little sexy.

I think the girls were beautiful natural but I never get tired of seeing a new version .
Bring em on!!!

The Wonder Woman (Frida) picture is great - and I truly like the one of Agnetha and Frida that Fir&Ice sent. That is a classy re-make... Although - I prefer original pictures. The enchanced pictures look fake with bright colours "in the wrong place". On the other hand - the fantasy ones look rather interesting and worth checking out, if you are not taking them too seriously.

Hi Brian,

I wish a good treat for us Björn fans too :-). Yes, both girls are quite sexy and they dared to show it. It was very common in Sweden in the 70's and 80's to be topless in beaches. It was considered more odd to wear a bikini top than being without it :). So the girls just followed a trend. Besides, Swedish women didn't wear bras very often, and it used to be a little hobby of mine to try to figure out whether the ABBA girls wore bras or not.

Well, I was also in Stockholm, Sweden during 1980 (and 1981). I was working in an old people's home in Nacka, and always on my way home sitting in a metro train I passed a local open air swimming pool and I could see the young girls lying in the sun topless.

With the software out there these days it is sometimes difficult to spot a fake picture and when it is done well I have no complaints so long as due respect is given to the people pictured.

Trouble is it makes it hard to believe anything you are shown as the possibilities are endless for image manipulation.

artemis - 10.11.2006, 17:03

i agree with lufti for the most part, colour and reangle them however you like, but i prefer it to stay as it is. i do find it funny when people put different heads on bodies like that wonder woman one but overall, i much prefer the pic to stay as it is and use subtle changes in photoshop. i'm a fan of using lensflares and bursts of light at the corner of pics for example, but i prefer to enhance rather than outright change

Re: Tweaking reality with Photoshop - what is your opinion?

drimnagh - 10.11.2006, 17:37

Well, like it or not photoshop is here to stay so I guess we'll have to get used to it! Probably best to see it as a bit of harmless fun, but then again the boundaries of taste can be exceeded, in which case I think it best to simply ignore the tacky ones and enjoy the ones that add to ABBA's status as pop icons rather than ridicule or detract from it.

I really enjoy using PhotoShop to create new art from my favorite pictures of ABBA. Most of my art consists of wallpapers so I can have ABBA as my desk top back ground.

Here are a few of my pieces:

http://i4.tinypic.com/4doeyb7.jpg (That is an image that I colorized. I left the background black and white on purpose. I was planning on using this in a wallpaper, but never actually finished the wallpaper!)

http://i15.tinypic.com/47v19qb.png (This is one of my favorite wallpapers. It's titled: 'Cluttered Desktop'. I was going for a look of a desk scattered with papers and photographs)

http://i9.tinypic.com/49gl3c1.png (This one is "Rock Stars" As you can see, I like to write out Frida's full name on wallpapers to keep the balance in the name ABBA FBBA or ABBF doesn't quite look right, ;))

http://i15.tinypic.com/2mqnng1.jpg (For this one, I wanted something very heavenly, like red cast clouds as the sun sets)

http://i15.tinypic.com/2qnb42u.png (This is my 'Jumping Agnetha' wallpaper. I colorized both of the black and white images.)

http://i10.tinypic.com/48fub5u.jpg (This wallpaper is about a year old, but I really like it, and it's my current desktop background.)

http://i7.tinypic.com/2wc40if.jpg (And one last one. Again, it's very simple, but I loved the picture so much that I only did a few simple enhancements and added the text)

Thanks those of you who replied about the notes..The Frida one is NOT fake Johny..its real from her clic sessions as was pointed out already.
I have not forgoten you want the more risque ones..
I am just too busy right now to be able to scan them and send..
Give me more time and I shall send them.

BTW I do not do the photoshop work myself I bought them from a friend.
I comissioned him to make them.

I love the weird fake ones the weirder the better because I have by now seen almost every abba pic out there thats true.
Us old fans get bored wiht no new pics to see.,
Bri
