    The Allman Brothers

    In Memory of Duane Allman

    DUANE "SKYDOG" ALLMAN
    November 20, 1946 - October 29, 1971

Born in Nashville, Duane grew up in the south and with his brother Gregg created the prototype southern rock band, the Allman Brothers. Duane was a slide guitar master and his burning and soaring improvisations combined the blues of Elmore James and Muddy Waters with the jazz flights of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. The band was an intensive sonic spread-with dual drummers and twin guitar leads they created a style that mixed hard-core rock with melodic explorations of tunes that could last half an hour or more.

Duane played with Gregg in regional bands like the Allman Joys and Hour Glass, then found work as session guitarist on many of the soul sides cut in the 60's in studios like Fame and Muscle Shoals. He suggested to Wilson Pickett that he cut "Hey Jude" and Duane's guitar roars in and makes the track an ear-opener. He wound up on sides with Aretha Franklin, Clarence Carter, King Curtis, and Otis Rush. Record company interest in cutting in a solo album lead to Duane gathering together various musical mates and the Allman Brothers was born from a several hours long jam in March 1969.

They cut their first album and hit the road playing at Fillmore's East & West, as well as clubs and festivals in-between. When Eric Clapton came to town to work on his double record LAYLA, producer Tom Dowd hooked him and Duane up, and Allman ended up playing on most of the album, coming up with the title tune riff and driving Clapton to some of his finest and most deeply felt playing, resulting in an all-time classic set. A LIVE AT THE FILLMORE double album with the Allman Brothers soon became a best seller--with its extended jams it captured the real power and essence of the band. It's one of the five best
    live albums ever cut.

And it was music with healing power. I almost didn't go one night when they were on the bill at the Fillmore--I had a splitting headache. But I was drawn anyway and wound up backstage, lying on the floor behind the lightshow screen during their set. About an hour into it I realized my headache was completely gone, I was riding the sound
    and getting well.

Duane was spokesman and leader for the group and he lived music with a passion. When I interviewed Duane in 1970, he talked about the joy of playing with the fervor of a Baptist preacher. "It was fun and it's never stopped being fun.we were up there blowing as funky as we pleased; sixteen years old, forty one dollars a week, the big time. And all we wanted to hear was that damn music being stomped out...that's what I love man, to hear that backbeat popping, that damn bass plonking down man, Jesus god!" The band toured relentlessly, criss-crossing the country. It was during a break in fall of 1971, at home in Macon, when Duane rode his Harley to an afternoon birthday party. A truck turned left in front of him and Duane went down, the bike landing on top of him. He died a few hours later. The band limped on, bassist Berry Oakley was particularly hard hit by the death and had increasingly heavy chemical problems. Almost exactly a year later he too went down on his bike--some four blocks away from where Duane's accident happened.

The band plays on to this day with some of the original members--but they've never matched the heights they hit when Duane was the pilot, taking them all along on his ethereal cruises. His music lives on.
