in the end of the seventies ....how keep your love for Abba
Hello People,
I was a fan when I was a teenager, in my school there were some guys which loved Abba , but they didn’t dare to tell like me how they were fan….effectively in the end of the seventies it wasn’t chic or fashion to tell that….but in my family it was more easy , my sister loved them , even she wasn’t a so great fan like me, but she is older and I think it’s the reason why I have kept my passion for them…In your story have you given some battles in your family or in school to show and keep your love for them , or was it easier like my experience.
Please don’t forget me….
Amitiés,
Lionel

Sadly abbalionah

It wasnt fashionable here either to like Abba, in Fact I would say it was actively discouraged by your peers, either you were considered soft or called names.

And you should have liked zz top or any of the heavier Bands or solo artistes around at the time (Most of them where Crap) hehe

Though Abba were doing well in the charts, it was considered ''your Parents type of music'' However I had always been headstrong and would ignore any comments, although maybe wouldnt always admit who I liked Musically, at the tender ages of 13/14 it was wise. and maybe saved a few nasty comments from others.

My own brother teased me terribly about abba, though behind his bedroom door he could be heard playing ( I saw it in the mirror = Crazy world , and Hey Hey Helen ) his favourites lol (But they where Manly to like? lol

I whethered the storm got a job still listened to abba and the world knew I liked them, christmas presents included the visitors album from said Brother, annuals from sister and a new stereo from my mother to play them on.

Nowadays its reversed and it is quiet cool to like abba, I dont keep quiet at all , all my friends know I love Abba and even today a friend that doesnt understand how to put music on their mp3 player, came over for me to do it for them, and said looking at my itunes while I was sorting them out, GOD! HOW MANY ABBA TUNES HAVE YOU GOT!! Jokingly

times have changed for abba fans
what was kitch is now cool

although they were never kitch to me

I kept my love for Abba going at the end of the seventies by contiuning to buy their records Super Trouper and The Visitors and the singles. what I can't understand is if Abba where never popular when they were around, how come in The United Kingdom (one of the hardest places to break in for someone from a non speaking English country and Germany they had 9 number one singles and in the Uk at least nine number one albums!) Some one must of like them !!!!

Not sure how many albums went to number one in Germany. can someone help? Please
abbangelears - 28.10.2006, 23:30

In my family everybody liked Abba, so I had no problems; in fact Abba was the only act we all liked and nobody complained when we played their songs. Playing Abba was a guarantee of peace. As for my friends, they were no fans, but didn't bother me about it. Music was not such an important thing. Those days girls were the most important thing.
Fire&Ice - 29.10.2006, 19:28

My family liked ABBA. Dad's hobby was playing jazz music on the piano, so he quite okayed my listening to ABBA 24/7, and mom was only bothered when that volume control lost its control!

It wasn't fashionable to like Abba I know, but I didn't give a damn about that. I was the biggest fan in my school and surprisingly, people tolerated me as well and I came across a few fans there too!

In fact, I had quite a lot of ABBA friends!

But you question is - how did you keep your love for Abba in the end of 70s? Well, I didn't. I simply stopped listening to ABBA at that time... after Agnetha and Bjorn's divorce..

Hello Friends,
A big bisou (kiss) for all your replies,
Effectively sad for You Jack , I notice where Abba was the more popular it was the less easy to tell your love….in France it was a bit easier, even some guys looked to me with some contempt, they weren’t my friends, and my friends didn’t allowed to tell a bad thing about them….I need to say to you John and Yvana, in the end of the Seventieth after Gimme Gimme Gimme fortunately their popularity was restored in France, I believe the fact they came and make a concert was a great idea, because when they came for Waterloo, I do I do, Fernando and Money Money , they have sold a maximum of singles, after it was a not so easy apart for Take a chance on Me, but they came in France for its promotion too.
You wrote Yvana after Björn and Agnetha divorced you didn’t want more to hear their songs….I think you have changed a lot now!...
Amicalement,
Lionel

In the late seventies it was very "uncool" to be an ABBA fan.

The guys in my school class prefered rock groups like Queen or AC/DC and made silly jokes about ABBA.

Some of the media was friendly to ABBA (BRAVO and other magazines), but others critizised them as a group who wants only earn money, with commercial simple songs which will live only a short time. (how wrong they were, )

Although I was a bit angry about that all, I didn´t care, because I knew, that ABBA´s music is good. ABBA´s old and new songs in the late seventies and early eighties made it very easy for me to go on as their fan.
I enjoyed their music then and I still do today.

I know what you mean Toni, it was so uncool to like ABBA I can remember when Chiquitita was Number 1 here class mates saying OH ABBA!

Why are they Number 1

I remember going to school and putting up with stupid jokes about ABBA still being around.

I still played there Albums and Of Course when Super Trouper, The Visitors & The Singles The First Ten Years came Out I played them often.

I knew also that there music would be around for years to come, I think of some of the comments made then, How wrong they were.

Not so long ago I bumped into an old school friend who rubbished ABBA's Music around this time.

She found every opportunity to put there music down.

Needless to say I mentioned it to her and she cracked up. Telling me She now had ABBA Gold in her collection, And finally admitted to being wrong.

Same here. I also had several "discussions" about ABBA vs. The Beatles. That's why I'm so tired about anything like this today. But it actually wasn't hard to stick to ABBA. If you're convinced for some reason then you simply are a fan and won't doubt it just because of some childish friends sticking to 2nd class bands only. :P

My favourite football team finally had to play in the 2nd division after fighting against it for years. They returned immediately and played better than ever. So you get rewarded. Well, quite comparable to ABBA - almost. :D

And don't forget that back then there was something new about ABBA all the time - even in the early 80's. I didn't feel the need to talk to other ABBA fans because of that.

Some chart positions are listed with each album at the official site: Arrival, Voulez-Vous, Super Trouper, The Visitors - all No. 1. The Album reached No. 2. The early albums hadn't been released at first, but the early hits compilations made well I think.

John, "The Best Of ABBA" (German version of "Greatest Hits") also reached Nr. 1 in the German chars.

Later "A wie ABBA" and "ABBA Gold" were Nr. 1 albums, too.

So they had 7 Nr. 1 albums in Germany.

thanks Toni,

I am always surprised that a great music loving country like Germany didn't put The Album at number 1.

How many weeks in total were abba at number one in Germany?
Toni do you know?
Toni - 06.10.2007, 13:15

John, with their albums ABBA were 45 weeks on Nr. 1, with their singles 33 weeks.

It´s strange to me, too that "The Album" only reached Nr. 2.

In Germany "The Name Of The Game" wasn´t that popular. Even I didn´t like it very much in 1977. Perhaps was that was the reason, I don´t know.

Here is a link to the German charts:

Although 'The Album' 'only' reached No.2 in Germany,
it was the 6th Best Seller of 1978 there - beating most
of the German No.1 Albums of that Year.

The German Album Chart was only a Monthly Chart, until 1978
- but, I have used Weekly 'converted' Positions, for ABBA's 1975
to 1976 Albums.

(I have a German Album Chart Book, that has converted
the Monthly Album Charts, into Weekly ones).

Their German No.1 Albums, (Weeks at No.1 in Brackets), were:,

'The Best Of ABBA' (1975 - 4 Weeks)

'Arrival' (1976 - 14 Weeks) ***

'Voulez Vous' (1979 - 4 Weeks)

'Super Trouper' (1980 - 2 Weeks)

'A Wie ABBA' (1981 - 5 Weeks)

'The Visitors' (1981 - 5 Weeks)

'Gold' (1992 - 11 Weeks)

*** = Some sources give 'Arrival' 15 Weeks at No.1

'The Best Of ABBA' was the Best Seller of 1976 in Germany.

'Arrival' was the Best Seller of 1977 in Germany - and
'The Very Best Of ABBA' - a 24 Track Double Album
- was the 5th Best Seller of 1977 - it was a No.2 Album.

'Greatest Hits Vol. 2', 'only' reached No.6 in Germany,
but it Charted for about 70 Weeks, & sold so many, that
it was the 5th Best Seller of 1980.

Although the, 'Super Trouper' Album, was 'only'
No.1 for 2 Weeks, it sold very well, & was the 2nd
Best Seller of 1981 - and 'The Visitors' was No.1 for
5 Weeks, but did not sell so well - it was only the
20th Best Seller of 1982.

Germany was not keen on some of ABBA's choices
for Singles - 'The Name Of The Game' was only a
No.7 Hit there. 'Does Your Mother Know' was only
a No.10 Hit, & 'Voulez Vous' was only a No.14 Hit.
As far as Germany was concerned, ABBA had chosen
the wrong Singles, in all 3 of those cases.

Toni,

When I looked in that link you supplied detailing the german charts, I noticed "The Last Video Ever" at the bottom of the "singles" chart. Whats all that about? I have only known that as a Video/DVD which was released everywhere at the same time. Is it a song or an ep with the 4 songs featured on the video or something like that or just a typo?

Willie.

And it was similar in the 1980s. I can't tell anything about late 70s because I was a little girl then, but when I was in primary school in the middle 1980s, my classmates didn't listen to Abba. It wasn't fashionable to listen to such music. And of course some of my classmates used to make fun of me that I listen to Abba. But I didn't care. Almost everyone knew what kind of music I liked. I didn't care what other people thought of Abba. I have always liked the group and I have never paid attention to critical opinions about Abba. The only problem I had was with their records. It was very difficult to buy them then.

Hello Willie,

in Germany mucicDVDs are listed in the album charts usually. I think this is nonsence, but they do it that way. :? As "The Last Video Ever" is only a short time running DVD they put in into the single charts.
