Pope Meets Muslims in Bid to Defuse Anger
We all heard, what the pope said during his visit in Germany. On Sept. 17, the pope said he was “very sorry” that his speech, given at a German university the previous week, had apparently precipitated a storm of anger, including firebombings of several churches and threats on the pope’s life from extremist groups. A nun was gunned down in Somalia, though the circumstances remain unclear.

Three days later, the pope issued a second expression of regret, saying that his words had been misunderstood. Some Muslims have been demanding a more explicit apology, not just for the reaction to his words but for speaking them at all.

The pope did not make such an apology at the meeting today, held at the papal summer palace just outside Rome. But he did pledge to engage with the Muslim world.

“Dear friends, I am profoundly convinced that in the current world situation, it is imperative that Christians and Muslims engage with one another, in order to address the numerous challenges that present themselves to humanity,” he said, speaking in French.

Benedict is generally considered to be skeptical of open-ended dialogue among faiths, and he did not sketch out a program or timetable for such talks. The meeting today seemed more a statement of goodwill than an attempt to start that broader dialogue in earnest. It lasted about half an hour, including handshakes and greetings to the ambassadors, some of whom flew in from embassies in France or Switzerland for the occasion.

Still, several participants said they appreciated the gesture by the pope, which they said marked an end to the immediate crisis.

“It was very clear that he showed his profound respect,” said Albert Edward Yelda, the ambassador from Iraq. “He stated that he wanted all people to work together and exist peacefully.”

Mr. Yelda said that though the angry reaction by Muslims to the pope’s words was justified, today marked “a day of truth and reconciliation,” and he looked forward to further steps to bring Catholics and Muslims together.

“We have to reconcile,” he said. “And we need a dialogue based on truth, as well as a genuine constructive dialogue. “We don’t need to hide things; we don’t need to say something and hide something in our heart.”

So, what do you think about this? I think that the pope should have really apologized for what he said. What's your opinion?
