Tenacious D's film is nearly with us
Jack Black's band make big screen debut

Tenacious D's film is nearly with us
Jack Black's band Tenacious D are finally set to hit the big screen.

The Ben Stiller-produced 'The Pick Of Destiny' tells the quest of Tenacious D (Black and Kyle Glass) to become the greatest band ever. All they have to do is journey across time and space in search of a magical pick that will be their key to superstardom.

"It's definitely the funniest movie on paper that I've ever read," says Kyle Gass immodestly. "It starts off as kind of how the D was formed. It goes into a quest for 'the pick,' a magical pick that will supposedly help us rock like the rock gods we so admire. It's a zillion laughs."

Meat Loaf guest stars in the movie as Jack Black's dad.

The film is released on November 17.

The Song Remains the Same...ich weiss nur nicht, ob ich darüber lachen oder weinen soll

Led Zeppelin makes hell for film over 'Heaven'

    November 6, 2006
    BY CINDY PEARLMAN
He wanted to climb the "Stairway to Heaven," but Jack Black ended up on the highway to hell.

That's what happens when you deal with a temperamental classic rock group like Led Zeppelin. To wit: Black tried to use their most famous song title, "Stairway to Heaven," in his new movie "Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny."

Permission was granted by Zeppelin -- but after the scene was filmed, Black didn't get a whole lotta love from the Zep. The members demanded to pull their song title from the gag.

The scene is in a mock Rock and Roll Hall of Fame set in California. The deal was: All rock groups depicted in this faked museum had to give permission to use their name, likeness, music and/or song titles. Black and his "D" partner Kyle Gass have a moment when they climb a huge staircase with a flashing neon sign "Stairway to Heaven."

"The Beatles said yes to having their image in the scene. Many groups said no problem," says "D" director Liam Lynch. "Zeppelin was a problem. They gave us permission and withdrew it after we filmed the scene with a huge 'Stairway to Heaven.' They said no and we had to re-shoot that part of the movie."

"We ended up calling the staircase 'Guitarway to Heaven,' " says Lynch. "And we were like f--- you. I don't really want to get into it more. We also had problems with the Sex Pistols."

For his part, Black isn't upset with the rock legends. "We liked 'Guitarway to Heaven.' It sounded a little dumber, which made me happy," says the comic rocker.

kannst du kurz sagen worum es geht....!!???

Re: Tenacious D's film is nearly with us

    Black Dog - 07.11.2006, 22:08

    sehr sogar! oder was?

They are assholes when it comes to things like this.

If i were Zep i'd probably do the same. I hate Hollywood, and all it's shit.

Re: Tenacious D's film is nearly with us

    Black Dog - 08.11.2006, 19:04

    In the Key of 'D'
Extended interview: Jack Black and Kyle Gass tell EW's Dan Snierson why ''Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny'' is better than ''Star Wars,'' influenced by ''The Graduate,'' and what (besides hummus) it will lead to on Kyle's list of backstage demands
n the desolate, acid-washed year of 1988, two struggling souls crossed paths in the City of Angels. Sharing a passion for avant-garde theatrical arts and Queen-size rock & roll histrionics, Jack Black and Kyle Gass forged a friendship, dedicated themselves to the arcane craft of acoustic heavy metal, and formed a band/comedy act the likes of which had never been seen. Jack sang lead. Kyle led the guitar charge. They called themselves Tenacious D, and they crafted anthems about shiny demons, killing yaks with mind bullets, and their lone fan, Lee. Tenacious D chronicled their journey to the crested peak of rock goddery (at least in their own weed-muddled noggins) in a series of beloved HBO shorts in 1999. Soon after, they were rewarded with sold-out concert halls and later a platinum album. Yet the two-headed cult sensation realized that there was still one thing left to conquer: Movie Mountain. So they toiled on ideas for the next half decade — with liberal breaks for naps and burrito runs. Under the stewardship of writer-director Liam Lynch (Sarah Silverman: Jesus Is Magic), they begat Nov. 22's Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny, which documents the duo's epic quest for a satanically powered guitar plectrum that would help them become, as self-prophesied, the greatest band of all time. (The film also features an appearance by Sasquatch.) Herewith, a colloquy with Black, 37, and Gass, 46, who sometimes are in character, sometimes not, but are always game to hold court.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Earlier this month, you attended the world premiere of your movie in London. What was that experience like?
JACK BLACK: We had to walk the red carpet in our king's robes, crowns, and scepters. We wanted to make a special splash for old London town. The peeps were excited to see the D and then we were whisked off directly to Jonathan Ross, who's England's Letterman. I guess he's England's Letterman-Leno because I don't think he's got any competish.
KYLE GASS: We're actually more popular per capital in England. Why? I don't know. Australia too. Australia has, like, 100 people living in it. And 60 of them [are D fans]. If we had that here, we'd have 170 million fans... I'm kind of into math.

How does it feel to finally give birth to a D movie?
JB: We didn't put in half as much work as Star Wars — yet it's better than Star Wars.
KG: We're entertaining the notion of winning the Nobel Prize for comedy.
JB: There's such a dropkick and power punch that you're going to wake up after the movie's over — not because you fell asleep out of boredom, but because you are physically knocked out, drooling, eye blood, nose booger. But in a good way.
KG: You'll probably have minor diarrhea.

Did the greatest band of all time set out to make the greatest movie of all time?
JB: Look at the other greatest things of all time, like ''Stairway to Heaven.'' Was Jimmy Page trying to write the greatest song ever written when he wrote the greatest song ever written?
    KG: He actually was.
JB: He was? Tell 'em, Kage.
KG: He set out to make the greatest rock and roll song ever. He had the music, and then Robert Plant wrote out his dumbass lyrics in like a half hour, and it worked.
JB: Dude, the Robert Plant lyrics were good on that song!
    KG: You like them?
JB: I don't know what he means all the time, but they're evocative of poetic things. [To see Black's list of the top 5 music movies of all time, click here.]

Didn't the talk about a film start soon after the HBO show?
KG: These two women executives said, ''We will give you one million dollars.'' And at the time we didn't have a lot of money and it seemed like insanity. Then we came back to earth — like, we would split that, and that would be for everything and also you'd sell the rights to your first child.
JB: [To Kyle] Didn't they also give us each a $100 advance?
KG: I talked them into that.
JB: We tried to write it with a friend of ours, and there was no inspiration there. We said, ''Forget it, we're not writers. Let's just take pitches.'' [In one version of the script, the duo would embark on a ''lost city of Atlantis''-type adventure. ''It was very funny but not our sense of humor,'' recalls Black]. So then we were working with Liam on some short films for the concerts. He was like, ''Dude, we'll write [the script] together, it'll be your vision,'' and we were like, ''Yeah, let's try it. We'll have fun with Liam.'' And we realized that it should just be, plain and simple, the story of Tenacious D, like a biopic, from the beginning to the end of our first adventure to become the greatest band on Earth. And we came up with the concept of the guitar pick of destiny, put a Da Vinci Code conspiracy spin on it, and wrote the script pretty fast. It was only like a month and a half... Then we took it around town, and New Line was really the only one that believed in us. And they were into Liam, even though he had not directed any features before. Then I did King Kong, and two years later we made it.

What were your influences for Pick of Destiny?
KG: There's a little Karate Kid in there.
JB: There's a lot of Spinal Tap, because that is the benchmark. What's a really funny rock movie since then? I'm gonna say zero. There's some Cheech & Chong, Beavis and Butt-head. A big influence was Indiana Jones — part 2, the bad one, with the devil guy with the pumping heart. There's a bit of Jaws.

    Why Jaws?
JB: I just like Jaws, so I wanted to say anything I like.
KG: I like The Graduate. That's one of my favorites.
JB: [To Kyle] Don't say, ''I like it.'' Say, ''There's some Graduate in there.''
KG: Rosemary's Baby is one of my faves.
JB: Stop saying it's your favorite!

What was the toughest thing about making the movie?
KG: Coming up with the story. Once we had a story that we liked, it just took on its own momentum.
    JB: And writing the music.
KG: Writing the music was hard.
JB: It's the same as writing a song. What's the hardest part: subject matter and music? What's the hardest part of making a burrito? Getting the ingredients. What's the secret to making a good burrito? I don't care how good of a burrito maker you are, what are you using — five-day-old lettuce or fresh?
    KG: Fresh.
JB: Exactly. You must bring the fresh lettuce.

So how do you guys manage the songwriting duties? Do you really stare at each other until ''inspirado'' hits?
KG: For this movie, we had to write them to order. The script came first and we'd go, ''All right, we need a sensitive ballad here, we need a rockin' opening there.'' But the classic Tenacious D songwriting is Jack or myself will have an idea — I might have a riff — and we'll improv. And once Jack's feeling it, we turn on the tape recorder and start jamming, improv on that riff, improv on those lyrics, and then go back and see if there's anything good in there.
JB: For me, it's all about the funny subject matter. Kyle wrote a great riff for the album that's in the closing credits. But it sat there for a long time. Then I came up with a subject matter for it called ''The Metal.'' I'm like the Devil and I'm singing about how other forms of music have tried to win, but the metal always wins because it's stronger. And that could sustain a song because it's funny, and it also points out the ridiculousness of music being macho. There's something weird about saying, [in deep, evil voice] ''This is the music of the warlords! And after I finish playing, I will use my ax to chop thee in half!''

NEXT PAGE: Black and Gass talk about cameos from Tim Robbins and Dave Grohl, why Black stuck with the D, and his advice to Gass on handling superstardom
How much of a challenge was it to make a movie that would appeal to the masses but also would please hard-core D fans?
JB: We never really thought about the fans when we made the TV show because we didn't really have any. And that worked out good, because we were making stuff that we thought was funny. So this is the same approach... We did stay true to the original show in a lot of ways — a lot of references back to the olden times.
KG: We definitely didn't pander. We just blew up the world hopefully into a really long, really good episode with more production values.

So you didn't ever wonder, 'Will everyone get this?'
KG: Oh, definitely. That's why the origin story is in there.
JB: Even if you've never seen the [TV show], I don't think anything in there plays like, 'Wink wink! Those of you special get it!' Because if everyone who's ever enjoyed the D came to the movie, it would be a flop.
KG: We've gotta get the newbie babies.

The movie has lots of cameos, including a memorable one by Tim Robbins [an old pal from L.A.'s experimental theater group the Actors' Gang]. How did you come up with his role as a creepy, one-legged foreigner who helps the D break into the Rock and Roll History Museum to steal the Pick of Destiny?
KG: He came in and was like, ''I was thinking he should have a Russian accent,'' and I was like, ''Oh, Tim, please don't pick our movie to stretch in.'' He read it every other way kinda lame because he wanted to do the Russian accent. But now I can't imagine it any other way…. And we needed some Oscar cred.
JB: We've got one Oscar winner and one nominee.
KG: But we have, like, four Golden Globe nominees.

You filmed a new ending for the movie — a musical showdown with the Devil, played by Dave Grohl. One wouldn't think that the D did reshoots.
JB: Maybe we shouldn't call it a reshoot. Let's call it a D-shoot. It's a flavor-enhancing ass-blowloader.... We need a heart-stopping finale to explode people's brains, and it took us making a whole movie to realize what we needed.
KG: You don't want it half-baked. The fans deserve it. We've made them wait a long time for this. I hope they haven't forgotten. I pray they haven't forgotten. [To Jack] You know what'd be good for our movie? If the Vatican condemned it.

You worry that fans may have forgotten you?
JB: I don't think they've forgotten, but the field's gotten more competitive. You've got this Sacha Cohen upstart and he threatens to knock us off our powerful comedy-rock pedestal — not that he rocks, but just that he comedies. We've got to bring all the spicy mustard to compete with the hounds nipping at our heels, the jackals trying to bite our privates — and we will strike back with a mighty blow.

It's a pretty daunting task to face down Satan. Are you sure you guys are up to it?
JB: The movie is the story of Tenacious D's quest to become the greatest band of all time, so it seems unavoidable that at some point we would have to have the classic battle with Satan, à la Robert Johnson. Or the ''Devil Went Down to Georgia'' dude.
    KG: Or Faust.
JB: Or that dude from Crossroads, Ralph Macchio... It's about facing your fears. You know how the most delicious thing about Star Wars really is Darth Vader? A movie's only as good as its kickass villain, and no one's as powerful as Beelzebub. Satan is the ultimate fucking villain.
KG: [To Jack] What about Philip Seymour Hoffman in M:I3?
JB: I haven't seen that. Is he badass?
KG: I don't know. You can imagine, though. When he puts his f---ing serious badguy sauce on, Tom's in for a wild ride…. I mean, it's a titantic battle.
JB: I'm pretty sure you said ''titantic.'' Is that like a combination of something and something else?
KG: Of titanic and tantric. A very sexy large battle.

There's a subtextual stoner vibe in the HBO show, but it's really played up in the movie. Was that a conscious decision?
JB: We never got stoned on the HBO show?
    KG: No.
JB: I thought we did… I mean, it's not like Cheech & Chong where the plot of the movie is to smuggle the weed over the border in our weed car.
KG: It's accurate [to] that kind of Boho existence. It's just a part of the world — donuts and coffee and weed. You assume that it might help your music, and it probably doesn't, but if you believe it does, it might.
JB: There's weed, there's Sasquatch, there's the devil, and there's rock. It's a delicious soup. It's an essential ingredient... Anyone that goes, 'Oh, bad form! I disapprove of your weed celebration!' — I don't really care about those people anyway.

Given your movie career, Jack, you could've left the D behind. What's kept you loyal?
JB: This is my baby. I didn't write King Kong. Plus, I would've been haunted for the rest of my days by people going, [in brokenhearted-boy voice] ''How come you left the D behind? How could you?'' So now I'm covered. Whether it's a success or not, we f---ing made a D movie — that we like.

What's your prediction, in millions, for the opening weekend box office?
    KG: I'll say 61.
JB: I'd be really stoked if we got 10. But then the next weekend? Niiine! Then the next weekend? Eeeleven! It's all about the legs.
KG: My theory is: If RV can be the No. 1 comedy, then maybe a bowl of s--- can be No. 1.

Kyle, did Jack you give you any advice about the coming superstardom?
KG: Well, I've had the opportunity to observe Jack throughout his entire movie star journey. And since the HBO show, I've gotten a chance to be a celebrity lite. Whereas 84 percent of the people know Jack, probably a strong 7 percent are familiar with my work.
JB: That's a lot when you look at the whole population.

So Jack, what advice did you dispense?
JB: [To Kyle] Reach for the stars — but keep your feet on the ground.
KG: [Extends hands toward the ceiling, plants feet firmly on the floor] Like this?
JB: Take it slow. Don't do blow.
KG: Don't get high — on your own supply.
JB: I'd say hold off on the bling-bling.

You're now embarking on a world tour to support your new album, Pick of Destiny. What are the demands in your contract rider?
JB: Diaper genie, crib, old-man rocking chair, electronic foot massager. Maybe a Jacuzzi.
KG: I want whores. Three whores… And hummus.
JB: [To Kyle] Letting people know you want whores cuts down on your Backstage Betty potential.
KG: You're right. Scratch that. We're going to call them ''contest winners.''

Where does the D go from here?
KG: I see one sequel, probably bad, maybe an album.
JB: There's gonna be a lot more women in the sequel. This one was pretty much a sausage fest.
JB and KG: [Overlapping] It's a brodeo.
KG: Jack and I will fight over some female love interest. And Tenacious D will taste ridiculous success.
JB: Yeah, we've got to trip the light fantastic.
KG: So there will be a love interest, a taste of success…and some sort of space journey.
JB: [Fondly] I think so too. There will be a shark — and we will be jumping it.

Next: Jack Black picks his top 5 music movies of all time

If Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny is ''the greatest motion picture of all time,'' as Jack Black claims (see our extended Q&A with him and Kyle Gass here), we must ask: What are the best music movies of all time? Behold Black's Top 5 list.

    1. Yellow Submarine (1968)
I loved it because of the art. I love good hand-drawn animation, and it had some supercreative psychedelic animation — that giant hand, the Blue Meanies. It just makes me excited and happy — so happy I want to barf. The music wasn't bad, either... Were those really the Beatles' voices in there, or did they just get imitation Beatles for that? Because if they were imitation Beatles, I'm taking this back.

    2. This Is Spinal Tap (1984)
I mean, it's so obvious I shouldn't even say it. Nah, I'm not going to say it. I'm not going to say Spinal Tap... Yes, I am! That's the gold standard. Forget music comedy — that's the one that all comedians point to as the great ''What the f--- was that?'' It's not just a comedy — that's like one for the ages. They're so f---ing funny, they changed comedy. And the songs were so clever.

    3. Footloose (1984)
It's superenjoyable because of its hot corn and cheese. Sometimes if you go deep enough into the corn and cheese, it comes out the other end and it's still corn and cheese, but it's delicious.

    4. The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Just because they had some sweet jams in there. It's one of the great crowd pleasers of all time. Not just for the gay folks.

    5. The Point (1971)
I saw it [on TV] when I was a kid. It's all about this little boy who didn't have a point on his head and all the people in the land of the Point had a pointy head and he didn't fit in and he was banished to the pointless forest where he had an incredible adventure and learned very important lessons about the universe. I like lessons about the universe... Very stoner-y. Things designed for children end up being the most stoner-y of all. The Point falls into that category. You definitely want to watch that wasted.

Kult-Band Tenacious D in England gefeiert
    Dienstag 19. Dezember 2006, 15:11 Uhr

Februar. Britische Kritiker lobten die Show.

    "Liebe braucht keine Ferien".

Also, es existiert "the pick of destiny".
