Whatever became of the rock guitar solo?

In the '70s and early '80s, an enduring rock song absolutely had to have a cranked-up, memorable instrumental (usually about two-thirds of the way in) that would send teenage musicians into their basements to practice again and again for hours on end while their parents upstairs stuffed cotton in their ears and towels under their doors.

Some passionate solos could nearly make you cry (even if there's no crying in rock 'n' roll, so suck it up, dude) with their intensity and sheer beauty. Now, quick, try to remember the last time you heard a solo on a new hit rock song that made you want to hear it again, like ever again. Give up? I thought so. Blame the sad state of pop music and modern radio, or the failure of today's hottest guitar-slingers to break into the mainstream, or both.

With Eric Clapton, one of history's finest guitarists, rolling into Grand Rapids on Thursday for a Van Andel Arena concert also set to feature finger-lickin' good axwork by Robert Cray, Derek Trucks and Doyle Bramhall II, it's only fitting to revisit some bracing guitar solos of the past.

Just in time for Clapton's first U.S. tour in eons, Guitar One magazine has compiled its list of the 101 greatest guitar solos of all time, topped by Jimi Hendrix's 1970 tune, "Machine Gun." Now, I might put Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour's "Comfortably Numb" at the top for its dynamic, perfectly orchestrated artistry, but coming in at No. 2 behind Hendrix isn't too shabby. Indeed, it's hard to quibble with any boundary-shattering contributions made by Hendrix (who appears on this Top 101 list four times) nor by those of Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page, who also notches four entries. Gilmour, Jeff Beck and Eddie Van Halen snag three spots each.

And it's only fair and right that Stevie Ray Vaughan, King Crimson's Robert Fripp, Frank Zappa, Peter Frampton, Richard Thompson, Carlos Santana, Duane Allman, Jerry Garcia, The Kinks' Dave Davies and even Blue Oyster Cult's Buck Dharma show up somewhere in the Top 101.

But no Clapton solo in the Top 10? The guy once regarded as the god of all rock guitarists comes in at No. 11 with "Crossroads" and makes only one other appearance: at No. 31 with his guest-guitar shot on The Beatles' "My Guitar Gently Weeps." No "Layla," no "Sunshine of Your Love," no "White Room," no "Badge." Puh-leeze.

That might even upset the 27-year-old Trucks (a member of Clapton's band and The Allman Brothers), who also appears on the Guitar One list, at No. 74 with "Desdemona."

Of course, I'd add some personal picks for underrated guitar offerings deserving milestone status: Elton John guitarist Davey Johnstone's emotion-drenched work on "Have Mercy on the Criminal" and "I've Seen That Movie, Too;" Neil Young's uniquely Neil Young-ish "Southern Man" and "Cinnamon Girl," Jethro Tull guitarist Martin Barre's searing "Aqualung," Mark Knopfler's "Brothers In Arms," The Allmans' Dickey Betts on "Jessica," a slew of early Steely Dan moments (such as Jeff "Skunk" Baxter's guitar lead on "My Old School").

What's clear from their list and mine, however, is that the most noteworthy guitar solos lie in rock's distant past: Of the 101 cited by Guitar One, only four (Trucks' "Desdemona," Cliff Gallup's "Race with the Devil," Joe Bonamassa's "So Many Roads" and Jonny Greenwood's "Electioneering") were produced in the past 10 years.

Where have all the guitar solos gone? Look no farther than Van Andel Arena on Thursday, and you'll hear a passel of 'em.

    Rock's best guitar instrumentals

For its upcoming November issue, Guitar One magazine ranks the 101 greatest guitar solos of all time. Here are the Top 10:

    1. Jimi Hendrix, "Machine Gun" (1970)

    2. David Gilmour, "Comfortably Numb" (1979)

    3. Mark Knopfler, "Sultans of Swing" (1978)

    4. Jimmy Page, "Stairway to Heaven" (1971)

    5. Jimi Hendrix, "All Along the Watchtower" (1968)

    6. Allen Collins/Gary Rossington, "Freebird" (1973)

    7. Don Felder/Joe Walsh, "Hotel California" (1976)

    8. Randy Rhoads, "Crazy Train" (1981)

    9. Stevie Ray Vaughan, "Texas Flood" (1983)

    10. Eddie Van Halen, "Hot for Teacher" (1984)
