A song you would LOVE to hear sung by Frida!
Is there a song that every time you listen to it, you start to think about how Frida would sound singing it?? For me this is the most recent of these songs. Listen, and try to imagine Fridas voice... By the way, I love Marianne Faithfull too.

Interesting thought Pekka. I will give this one some thought but my initial instinct would be a solo studio version of What A wonderful World.

Yes, that too has popped in my mind! What about "As Tears Go By" as the ending song on a Frida album with the first song being Morning Has Broken?
Would make a nice "story" as it starts with "it is the evening of the day..."

Good thinking Batman  . I think, an album purely as accoustic as Morning Has Broken would be wonderful. It would cover many types of music Frida has shown her appreciation of over the years  . Her "now" voice is perfect for minimal arrangements I think

Pekka - isn't it just. Phil Collins has just brought out a pretty good version as well. In fact I have heard this song by 4 or 5 different artists & have never heard one that I would call bad (sign of a good song to me).
I agree with you about Halleluja (funnily enough I was listening to it when I read your suggestion, my only problem with it is that everyone seems to be recording it at the moment. Gill

I love Frida's swedish version of Suzanne by Leonard Cohen. Here's one of my favourites by him, Bird On A Wire, sung by Esther Ofarim. I can well imagine this for Frida. It would have suited her at the time she recorded Frida ensam as well as it would now in 2010.

It's a wonderful song, isn't it?
I think Frida's warm and soft voice could give it a more tender touch, this song is so melancholic. Esther's voice is (or was) brilliant in any sense of the word, but a little lower would be beneficial to the song, IMO.

It has a beautiful, but sad and very true lyric about the passing of time and that nothing stays forever. It doesn't matter how many songs you've sung or how many books you've read, nothing stays, everything flows.

I hear what you are saying but with Frida's interpretive skills I think she could do a fantastic version, maybe slower than the normal covers. Just think about the other songs she has recorded that have been recorded by a lot of other people, I'm thinking of Du Är Sa Underbart Rar & Var Är Min Clown in particular but there are others that prove that she can pull it off. After many moons of pondering, and since I don't listen much to the music these days, I've managed to pick two songs. One of them is a cover, and the other one is a well known song by George Gershwin from the opera Porgy and Bess.
"I'm not in love" - but not the 10cc original version. I prefer Chrissie Hynde's version (The Pretenders) She is a rock chick, just like Frida was made to be one.

"Summertime" - bluesy and jazzy, but pleeeaaase not the Janis Joplin interpretation... :P

This is another "Summertime" - this one written by Leonard Cohen and Sharon Robinson. Recorded by Diana Ross in 1987, I think this is very Frida-esque.

This Goldfrapp song is great too. Like Alison Goldfrapp, Frida could tackle the three vocal elements beautifully: the operatic section, the breathy pop section and the spoken bits. Now if that is not a Frida-esque record, I don't know what is!

And, if you ask me, this recent Grace Jones song could take up where "Djupa Andetag" left off.

I agree, I think that if Frida had recorded a version it would probably been closer to the Frank Sinatra arrangement than the one Agnetha did which was closer to Doris Day's. Having said that I think she is well aware of what would happen between some ABBA fans if she did record it and therefore would not touch it with a ten foot barge pole. Gill

Alliecat10 - 21.11.2010, 02:00
These are some great choices for Frida to cover! Knowing that Frida can sing classically as well as in pop, rock, and jazz styles, I think these classical art songs would work well in Frida's voice.
This first song is called L'heure exquise (The Exquisite Hour) by Reynaldo Hahn. I think this song is very flowy and very lyrical and Frida's phrasing would be awesome on this song. Plus, it's in French and it would give Frida a chance to practice more of what she learned with that crash course in French.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKmmJLVtiMs
This second one is called Dein Blaues Auge by Johannes Brahms. Also very lyrical and beautiful. The title translates as Your Blue Eyes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZ0SEhOZ14s&feature=related
I believe that both of these songs would showcase Frida's rich mezzo-soprano voice with the tessitura of both songs being in a low to medium register with a high phrase capturing the feeling at the ending of each song.
Im still working on pop songs for Frida. That will come later. :)
Allison :)

For some reason I woke up this morning and had Desperado by The Eagles going round my head (haven't heard it for months), I think Frida would do a wonderful version. I think her voice and registre allow Beatles' songs. She's already covered one, "Can't buy me love", in the great Lite Gran I Orat, and I already like it better than the Beatles. Call me biased.

If her thoughts on a new CD materialise into recordings then let us have an acustic set........how awesome would that be?

a song you would LOVE to hear sung by Frida
China by Tori Amos from her 1991 debut album, Little Earthquakes. Actually, Silent All These Years, another track from the same album, is also not a bad selection, but China is one of the most beautiful songs and from the moment I first heard this back in 1992, I always imagined Frida doing it...it's so full of emotion and beauty.

From the moment I first heard China, I instantly thought of Frida doing it...it was made for her! It's one of my favourite songs...

I have many ideas for Frida, such as:
The Tide is High - Blondie (my #1 favorite song all time, even over ABBA songs)
In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel
Most anything by Sarah MacLachlan - especially Fallen
I Say a Little Prayer For You - Dionne Warwick
Ironic - Alanis Morrisette
Walking on Broken Glass - Annie Lennox
Irreplacable - Beyonce
Eyes Without a Face - Billy Idol
It's Still Rock and Roll To Me - Billy Joel
Suddenly - Billy Ocean
You Make Me So Very Happy - Blood Sweat & Tears
Tangles Up in Blue - Bob Dylan
Harden My Heart - Quarterflash
Carnival - The Cardigans (Nina Persson and Frida were both on Jojje's album!)
Rainy Days and Mondays, Superstar - The Carpenters
Ill Stand By You, Brass in Pocket - Pretenders
Drive - Cars
Time after Time, All Through The Night - Cyndi Lauper
These Eyes - The Guess Who
Killing Me Softly - Roberta Flack
Take A Bow - Madonna
Maybe I'm Amazed - Wings
He's So Shy - Pointer Sisters
You Can't Always Get What You Want - Rolling Stones
Foolish Heart - Steve Perry
My Cherie Amour, If You Really Love Me, You Are The Sunshine of My LIfe, Yester-me, Yester-you, Yesterday - Stevie Wonder
Heart and Soul - T'Pau
Hello It's Me, I Saw The Light - Todd Rundgren
Careless Whisper - Wham!
Magic - ONJ
Sorry about my long list. She would have enough here for about 2 or 3 albums of covers...I hope her vocal cords are rested.

Maybe I'm Amazed would be a fantastic choice. As for Stevie Wonder material there are a lot she could do, she was/is a huge fan, I think lyrically Sir Duke would suit her so well, a fantastic tribute to the jazz greats she loved as a child. Take a bow would be fantastic as well it's my favourite all time Madonna track. Gill

I'm delighted that you suggested ONJ's "Magic" - it's a great song. Very under-noticed and it's one that Frida could really make her own.

Yes...if The Movie is our cult classic, then ONJ's vast fanbase has Xanadu as their cult classic....although I would have throughly enjoyed Frida covering recording 'Physical' and the requisite video to go along with it!!!!
Speaking of Xanadu...I had thought about Frida covering ELO as well.....I think 'Strange Magic' would be great! Maybe even 'Mr. Blue Sky'?

If we're talking ELO, I'd be inclined to suggest something slightly less well-known - "Midnight Blue," for example. Perhaps done with a "Sista Valsen Med Dig" feel.

Nothing's wrong with her, if you ask me.
But I've become cautious because there were times when I mentioned that I like Cher people would look at me as if I was mad or just silly - they would only talk about her revealing dresses and weird public appearances, just look at the video clip.. but they'd never remember that she was awarded a well deserved Oscar! Sad, but true, because I think that Cher is an outstanding singer and also a wonderful actress.

what i have picked I think would work with fridas voice.

Magdalena, I think you've chosen a song that Frida herself must have liked. I can well imagine her listening a lot to Ella Fitzgerald, she was much into Jazz!
I know this song in German.
Inspired by the topic about En Ton av Tystnad I browsed my mind for my best liked simon and Garfunkel songs. Let's face it, The Sound of Silence was (rightfully) a huge hit for S+G, but Frida sings it better than Garfunkel - "better" is still an understatement.
Here's what I can imagine, if the arrangement gets adjusted to Frida's voice:
Lets begin with Garfunkel's "Bright Eyes" (P.Simon wasn't involved with it, AFAIK):
Link
And then there's El Condor Pasa, a traditional which had been covered a zillion times. Would be beautiful with Frida's voice, I think (the YT vid is made for karaoke, but it is the only studio recording I could find):

Great choice - especially if she sang it in a similar sultry way, compare Peggy's version to Shirley Bassey's which is probably better known - Peggy sure knew how to do inuendo just by using her voice which is something Frida could do as well.
Here is a song that has been recorded by so many different people but like Big Spender Peggy Lee managed to do the definitive version but Frida could definately have given her a run for her money

Anything, really. I don't want her last song to have been Morning Has Broken.
Well, not just anything..but, you know, something with a bit of pizzazz/oomph.

I love that song Andrew, and I think that it would suit Frida's voice perfectly.

I agree with you Andrew about that song, as long as they don't use the horrible electronic effect on Frida's voice that they used on Petula's there. Neither of them have voices which need it, in fact to me it destroys all emotion when ever it is used, but I do think that there is a strong song there.
Lisa - you know my opinion, I would be happy for Frida to record any Dusty track. Gill

I agree with you Gill. I think the electronic effect spoils Petula’s vocal a little bit, but I do think that it is a very good song.
I would be happy if Frida recorded any Dusty song, but if I had to choose, Goin' Back would be my first choice, closely followed by You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me. Actually, I think it would be fantastic if Frida recorded an entire album of Dusty Springfield songs :D .

Christine McVie – Givin It Back from the album 'In The Meantime.' It is a beautiful acoustic song and perfectly. I can't find a video of the song on Youtube, but I think that it would be a great song for Frida to record.

I have always thought that would be a good choice, although if we are talking about songs Kirsty has recorded I would prefer Days, I can just imagine Frida recording it, while in her mind thinking about it being a tribute to all the loved ones she has lost over the years, such as Ruzzo and Lotta and her several friends - the poignancy she would get into it would be amazing. I agree, and I don't know why they used that effect for Petula on that song, she still has an amazing vocal at 80!
An English version if you please :D

Someone ((perhaps me!) may have suggested this before but I wouldn't mind hearing Frida sing the Peggy Lee classic, 'Fever'. Irresistible with that accent! Initially, I did think of Agnetha but Frida's deeper tones would suit this more.

Fever does seem to be quite a popular choice as a song that she should/shoud've recorded. I seem to remember it getting mentioned in the Fantasy Frida album thread as well. Gill

how about lena's horne's 'stormy weather?' obviously it will be in a lower key but i think she can manage it. or 'willow weep for me?' which is lovely and low

For Once In My Life would be a great song for her to record but I would prefer something a bit more up tempo but with a swing backing rather than Judy's arrangement.
Selina, as I am sure you are aware Stormy Weather has been done in all sorts of keys and works well, again I think it would sound fantastic. Not sure about Willow Weep For Me, I can't remember hearing it before, so maybe that is my problem with the song (it sounds like it could be a bit of a grower) but it seemed to lack something to me. But then again Frida could make a telephone book sound interesting. Gill

After listening to Petula Clark singing Cut Copy Me after it was suggested Frida would be good singing it.
I reckon Frida could do a cover version of Missing by Everything But The Girl.

I am embarrassed to admit whilst knowing this Etta James track incredibly well, I never realised that it was her performing it. I agree that Frida would have done an amazing version of it. There are so many swing/jazz songs from that era I could imagine her doing
Another great Peggy Lee track that would sound wonderful by Frida

I'd love to hear Frida have a crack at "The Day The Wall Came Tumbling Down". I just feel her emotive voice could do the song full justice, in my mind I can hear her singing it.

Great choices Tony (with the exception of the Grace Jones track, but that is probably down to the fact that I have never "got her" appeal as a performer at all rather than the quality of the song). Gill

I know Grace Jones is something of a Marmite artist but listen to the story-telling and that lovely mellow tune. This was on her comeback album and it showed how a 60something woman can do something artistic and commercial without succumbing to mumsy schmaltz. The whole album is fantastic.

Petula Clark? Really? What about teaming her with the guys from Elbow? Frida's voice and their craftsmanship would be a lovely combination. All that beautiful orchestration matched with those flowing melodies. I love that they do rock music in a far more musical way the n most others -- subtle rock touches that don't sound like they're compensating for tiny penises. Or something.
What's the deal with Frida being so reluctant anyway? She SO needs to get back in the saddle.

Lol! Ain't that the truth! So-called 'rock stars', posturing, are usually over-compensating for something, the buffoons.
Elbow is a good choice. I don't understand the ? over Petula Clark, though. Why ever not? She's fantastic and has recorded some great songs that Frida could get her teeth into.

Nowt against Pet, as such. I quite like a good chunk of the new album (apart from Imagine and Love Me Tender - ugh). But I think Frida could afford to be a bit more daring.
Here's my secret: I never really got into the after ABBA stuff by either of the girls, to be brutally honest. Let's just say that my education has intensified a bit over the couple of weeks that I've been staying with TK (and driving his hubby nuts!). Still finding Agnetha's stuff a bit of a stodgy struggle to be honest but really starting to connect with the spikier stuff that Frida has done. So that kind of colours my attitude to potential new material. That's not to say that I love her solo output completely but she's far more interesting than I expected.
Have I gone way off track? If so it's cos I'm so knackered that I can't concentrate!
Re: A song you would LOVE to hear sung by Frida!
drimnagh - 12.06.2013, 22:38
^No, I understand what you're saying completely. Frida does have a 'spikier', more daring edge to her post-ABBA output. Agnetha was a bit more sugary, for want of a better phrase. Therefore, it's clear why you'd prefer Frida to record more edgy songs. It's a taste thing. Me, I like the whole banquet.
Re: A song you would LOVE to hear sung by Frida!
Cecily - 12.06.2013, 23:28
I'm not averse to a bit of sugar but I need to ration it. Nothing against Agnetha's voice because it's gorgeous. As they say on those godawful talent shoes, it's all about song choice.
