ABBA covers
Hey, it doesn't look like we have such a topic so far. I don't normally listen to ABBA covers (only the real stuff for me) but thanks to the online ABBA radio, I've had to reluctantly admit there are some fairly decent covers,.

So I'm currently listening to the Ten Tenors' Dancing Queen (no YouTube video, sorry :-( ).

it's only ten topics below yours in the related artist page ;)

Yes, the subjects overlap in some way, but there's differences, I'm finding that that ABBA internet Radio can be a good source for new and great ABBA covers :)

I mentioned this in the thread about the folky cover of LAYLOM. It might not please those who didn't like those acoustic make-overs (see also The Czars' "Angeleyes") but I think this is lovely.

It's an acoustic version of "The Day Before You Came" by Irish singer/songwriter, Freddie White. It dates from the 80s, I think.

Nice close harmonies but there is no real life to it. I prefer covers where the artist tries to do something different with a song. Gill

I like this one a lot too, how fab would it be to hear A & F sing this and the other acousticy version that have appeared recently in a special programme.

Like the R.P.O version of M X 3 too though I love the whole concept of that ablum.

Contro, thank you for posting I Saw It In The Mirror....I found it much more interesting than the 1973 re-working by B&B. Billy does have a light type of bluesy voice...which my have fitted better with the ABBA version while Bjorns voice and the extra backing harmonies may have worked better for the ABBA track

Stephen, like the cover of the TDBYC by Steven Wilson...I do like some of these acousticy ABBA tracks. The instrumental J posted is interesting too.

Contro's swedish version of My Love My Life and Ive Been Waiting For You are fairly faithful to the original recordings so, good posts guys :D

Steps - 'Lay All Your Love On Me'

Sorry folks but I've been listening to this version a lot over the last few days and I must say I've really warmed to it. I do think it's better than ABBA's version  :!: The original song was never one of my favourites from ST although it is a good song 8). I think it sounds so cold and clinical a bit like :puke: 'Under Attack' (however UA is a very weak song unlike LAYLOM which is a good one). Maybe that was the idea when ABBA recorded it  . As a result it goes to 2nd place for me in my list of preferred versions by different artists.

Top 5 LAYLOM versions for me are:

01. Steps (Love the 3 different vocalists in it - 1 per verse. Gives it a much warmer and varied feel) 8)
02. ABBA
03. Abbacadabra
04. Erasure
05. Information Society

I Let The Music Speak - 20.01.2012, 22:42

I'm not a fan of cover versions - of any act. I only really want to hear the ABBA versions of their songs. If someone had a hit with a cover of an album track (as opposed to a single), I'd be OK with it though, as it would bring such a track to a whole new audience.

Erasure's ABBA-Esque was OK though. They chose three smaller hit singles (and one massive hit) to cover.

Abba: The Tribute is the name of... well, an Abba-tribute-album, and all songs are by Swedish artists. One song I really like is S.O.S, which is performed by a group called Stonecake. I can't find it on youtube. It's really the only Abba-cover that I like.

On the subject of Madonna's ballads. You are spot on. There are some beauties within her recordings. These are are my favourite ballads of hers and all comprise a beautiful 90 minute playlist on my ipod.

Crazy For You
Don't Cry For Me Argentina
Has To Be
I'll Remember
In This Life
Like An Angel Passing Through My Room
Little Star
Live To Tell
The Look Of Love
Mer Girl
The Next Best Thing
Oh Father
One More Chance
Promise To Try
Spanish Eyes
Take A Bow
This Used To Be My Playground
To Have And Not To Hold
You'll See
You Must Love Me

If you don't have any of the above, Gill. I highly recommend you seek them out.

Best Wishes

Andrew

Hi Gill

Ditto dearest. Well done for your good taste in her ballads, Gill

The missing ones you've yet to discover are:

To Have & Not To Hold
Little Star
Mer Girl

These were the last three tracks on 1997's 'Ray Of Light' album. (Lovely way to end a classic album may I say) :!:

'Has To Be' was also from the 'Ray Of Light' Sessions. It was track No.14 on the Japanese edition. Elsewhere it was a bonus track on the 'Ray Of Light' UK Single only. Shame it never featured on the UK album but I think itwas considered lucky to end the album at track No.13 as No.14 is considered unlucky under that 'Kabballah' religion Madonna was/is into.

'In This Life' (one of the last tracks on 1992's 'Erotica') 8)

And finally 'The Next Best Thing' was taken from the OST to 'The Beach' (Film with Leonard Di Caprio)

All of the above are as good as the ones you know, Gill some infact even better IMHO :!:

Best wishes

Andrew

Oh, that is lovely. I think B&B (and probably A&F) would love that version.

Edit: Like it so much that I just tried to find it on iTunes - no joy :( She has only one album there (Dreams and Schemes and Parades) which sounds pretty good. Nice to hear that excellent artists cover other excellent artists!

Thanks for your reactions. TK, it's from the album 'Green', from 2004.

UK music journalist (and ABBA fan), Pete Paphides has just tweeted from a Men Without Hats concert that they are playing "SOS" and that he may explode!

They're playing SOS by Abba. I may explode.

I like that version by Charly Luske, actually. It adds something different to the song. That's what covers should do... Not just copying the original.

@ABBAfan25: I agree, it's refreshing. He changed the melodyline though... ABBA meets Coldplay.

Here's another cover.
This time it is a version of Nina, Pretty Ballerina.
You have to click in the Mp3 file beneath the story, Youtube link doesn't work ( as every ABBA video seems to get blocked these days by YouTube )

Much more than a catchy pop tune - unusual ABBA covers
Meant to start a thread in which the enduring quality of ABBA's songs are demonstrated by how well they work in unusual musical contexts (classical, jazz, gospel etc.)
