    News on Amplified. Italian interview
    Hi folks,

here's a link to an interview Mick has given today:

    http://www.kwmusica.kataweb.it/kwmusica/pp_scheda.jsp?idContent=135935&idCategory=2028

"Each time Mick Hucknall comes back to Italy his mood gets better. Everyone knows about the feeling he has with our Country, where he is going to perform in a new tour which will take him around for five dates. Simply Red will be the 25th at Cernobbio on lake Como, the 26th at the Stadio di Bologna, the 28th at the Arena Magna Grecia di Catanzaro Lido, the 29 at the Stadio di Ostuni and the 30th at Lucca.

Before that Mick and company will be at the Montreaux Jazz Fest, to reaffirm their enduring love for this genre, while Simplified, the album the band used to bring back on stage a mix of old (but nonetheless very well rearranged) and new hits, keeps doing well in the hit parade. About this and much more Mick "The Red" has spoken to Kataweb Musica during a visit to Milan to introduce his future plans.

How is this concert going to be compared for example to the one that ended up on the DVD filmed in Cuba? On the Gran Teatro's stage you looked like a stylish jazz-crooner...

We will try to preserve the energy of that fantastic place. The aim is to make the people enjoy themselves, they will really have to go crazy. I've never thought of an audience as a passive element. The people that comes to cheer us represent the other half of a show where involvement makes the difference. We are quite a lot on stage, I've even renewed the backing vocal section and the arrangements are a bit more complex, even though music is always about emotions, so you can't disguise them too much. It's true that with the string orchestra on DVD I looked like an entertainer, but when the rest of the guys came on stage it was a big party.

So it won't be long until the new album comes out.

Absolutely not. To tell you the truth everything is ready, the songs are there and some of them have already been recorded. I didn't have the time to define the arrangements for the rest, but the most is done and by the end of this year or the beginning of the next, the album will be out.

During the years the tone of your voice is even more reach in expressiveness. Thinking about your great performance of Cole Porter's classic "Every Time We Say Goodbye" have you ever thought about making an album entirely dedicated to the best songs.

The project was there a long time ago, and it was quite important. Then Nesuhi Ertegun, great talent scout and founder of the historical Atlantic label, and Miles Davis whom should have been involved as well, passed away.
Recently I've spoken to Tommy LiPuma (the producer among others of George Benson and Diana Krall), but for superstition I prefer not to think about it.

Italy has always offered you a very peculiar welcome. Has the public changed or has it grown with you?

A few characteristics have remained the same. The warmth, love, enthusiasm that you can spark here is hard to find elsewhere. Maybe someone who has discovered me in the middle of the 80s has now a family because they were flirting with their future wives listening to one of my songs. I've been told lots of these stories and I'm happy to have had a small part in this people's lives. That's why I wanted to rearrange some of my old hits. I dedicate them to all those fans who have patiently waited for me."

    @@@@PART 2@@@@

Have you ever considered a collaboration with an Italian artist or producer?

No, 'cause that would distract me from my own things. I like Vasco Rossi and Mina very much: the first because says lots of right things, while Mina has an extraordinary talent even for choosing her songs.

You have started your own music label, what do you think of the new possibilities offered by legal downloading?

I see them in a very positive way. I think this is a highly creative moment for those who work hard and seriously. Multinationals are too busy taking care of their managers' affairs to think of new ways and new channels of distribution. I've always thought this is going to be the way forward as the CDs sales are getting worse.

What is the philosophy behind "Blood and Fire", your raggae-dub only label division?

I've tried to focus on the 1975-78 years, a crucial moment for the raggae evolution thanks to people like Lee "Scratch" Perry, Sugar Minnott, Max Romeo, all extraordinary artist even though they're not well known. The first results were positive but there is lots to do here as well.

What would you like to answer to those who think you are now a quite gentleman who just wants to enjoy his life?

At 47 [:?:] you can't expect leading the life of a teenager, but I'm always very active. I travel, write, sing, have interests and passions which I share with my partner. Work is not everything but I still love making music so much I'll keep doing it for a long time.

What do you think of that? I wonder why they didn't put those things on their site yet.

    ciao

    Vialattea

"I feel half Italian. I like Mina and Vasco Rossi. I'd like to sing a duet with him: we've already met a couple of times and maybe one day it'll happen". Mick Hucknall speakes to the media to announce the dates of Simply Red's Italian tour. Five dates that will kick off from Como on the 25th of July.

"This tour is going to be different from the one before", the singer explained, "it'll be a comeback to rock, soul and blues, with much higher energy on stage and a new setlist with three absolutely new songs."

For the occasion Hucknall has announced that the new album will be out next year, following the new single "Oh what a girl".

I see if I can find something else...

Thanks so much for this translation. Very helpful.

Am I the only dumb shit that didn't realise that the tour is NOT about the new album?

Now I realise why we don't have a release date. We don't have an album yet. And won't until next year.

Ah the long waiting game for new SR music.

You can read the second and last part of the interview on my first edited message! :top:

Sam, I've read someweher on another Italian site that the single "Oh what a girl!" should be out in July.

I have to say I'm a bit puzzled by the lack of information on the SR site. :?

Can someone tell me what happened exactly when the site crashed last year?

I was not on the mailing list at the time...

You've done quite a good job of translating, don't know if I'd even want to take a red pencil to this. But I could pass it along to the official site, that's a great idea! Michi, what say you? Should we try?

Glad we still have someplace to share news with each other, leave it to devoted fans to spread the word. :top

Next step: DISCUSS what's here. What do you all think? We've got some comments; would like to see more.

Official story is that the site was attacked by a hacker. Regular visitors were experiencing numerous "mini-crashes" daily for about a week and a half to two weeks before the site was completely pulled down by SR's management. They apparently did manage to recover a fair bit of the data from the old site as they used it on the new one. (Example: the musician profiles)

As for unofficial stories of what happened--as many rumors as there are SR fans to spread 'em. We'll never know if any of those rumors had any truth to them. All I can say is, I'm glad I was fortunate enough to experience the old site as it was while it still was. The interactions we had with several band members are missed but were wonderful while they still lasted. Maybe someday ( :D ) we can reestablish those.

The management at least seem cool with our existence, they've got us in the official links section now. I'm glad we're keeping info flowing here--we seem to complement the official site well.

Thank you for the info, although the official story doesn't explain why the forum has been taken off from the new site and why our good ol' Mick is so quiet with his fans lately.

Anyway, I prefer them putting toghether a good album rather than sending out something they are not 100% happy with just to placate our insatiable appetite for more SR music!

Thanks again, Vialattea for translating for us. We all love you.

I think most of us feel detached from the new SR Website, the personal touch is gone forever. We all used to feel like visiting each other almost every day, sharing news, commenting on the music, making suggestiions, getting excited about concerts, telling our concert stories.....etc.

Feels like we were divorced from the family. All the cousins and sisters and brothers running around trying to find each other....many came here and although they don't post, I think they still visit. Some of them occasionally whisper a line or two, then disappear from visibility.

I've never been part of a website before sr.com and miss it very much, and miss the friendships built all around da music. (how are you ?)

We never see any visits, posts, or audio messages on the new site....
It's painful.....the party ended....the curtain closed on us.

No artist has the responsibility to maintain such a forum that had to be policed 24 / 7.....(what a monster of a job to chaperone.)

Hacker or hacker or good excuse to close shop, doesn't matter because we enjoyed it on his coin, and had fun, and now it's over.....

If ending the forums and making the site a "business place" gives our hero the privacy and peace of mind he sought, then successful it is. He deserves to have a private life and a public life as he chooses.

But what fun we used to all have coming together every day, hoping that he would read the nonsense we all wrote in sincerity !!!

I wonder if he misses us too.....and if the powers-that-be in management advise him not to get caught up again in such high maintenance traffic from all over the world.

    Beep Beep.
Love you all, (and again thanks a million for the translations)
    Lin xx
 and thanks a trillion to Michi for starting this alternate destination

Feeling the SR Official Web Site Blues!!!
I agree with you too Lin & Gina 100%!!! The Official SR Site is a shell of it's former self. It stinks that there are no forums, no messages from Mick since Christmas, very little interactions with the band (at least some of them would post to the old forums!), no new pictures or video clips, limited news, and not too many articles or interviews both new and old to read. The chartrooms are OK but usually when I log onto them nobody is there. I’ve lost contact with some fans and since I don’t see them on this web site, I have no idea how to contact them. And I don’t think the web staff is as nice as when Elaine was the webmaster. I’ve sent a few e-mails about different things and I never got a response to one of them. The New Official SR Website is all too business now!!!!! Not much enjoyment for the fans as there was before. I even think the layout and look of it is somewhat boring. Maybe it will get better in the future but I’m not counting on it. I miss the old site!!!! I’m not sure if everyone feels exactly like I do but I know we all miss how it used to be in one way or another.

I'm so thankful for these web forums that michi put up!!! Without them, I’d be a lost Simply Red Soul!!!! :-(

    thanks for the nice feedback.......

I recently discovered a "Greatest Hits" type of album released in April by the former label, and if you sample it on any site, the sound is terrible and the selection is part live, maybe even part "demo" of a studio recording.

I did report it to SR.com site and they had NOT even been aware of it, just to think somebody may see this album and purchase it, and it's probably not the quality that Mr. H. would have ever approved of releasing...but then, those record label guys owned you and your music and are allowed to do anything they want with it....

That's why so many recording artists are now independent...so they can own their own music, have artistic jurisdiction and approvals of their own works and talents without the heavy hand of the soap suds sellers who make their own decisions of what people "want to hear".

I just watched a Montreaux performance from 2003 and loved both Holding Back the Years and Sunrise I think was done just before the Sicily concert and DVD recording.....it was like watching it for the first time, and I wonder why he sang "wankee wankee" during the chorus...must have been an inside joke for the band...

You know Diana, and Gina, there are a lot of people who used to use the forum but NEVER came into the chatrooms.....and I think that's who we are all looking for these days, wondering if they are still interested in da music and hoping their lives are going well and often think about us too.

Guess I will just peek in there when I can to see if there is any life, or voices, or new photos, or announcements about new or old music.

Wotjek, did you ever finish school, record that jazz album with your Dad, or get to a Simply Red concert ? Maybe someday.

Does anybody care about the curlers in my hair....?
    So beautiful......

Did you ever see him on "Days?" Also, another good thing about his website is that they post all the press articles he does onto the site once the magazines are off the shelves so that way everyone gets to read everything no matter where they live. Also, Stephen posts his own PERSONAL photos of events he goes to & pics of him & his family, which makes it extra-special - sharing his life with us, actually CARING about his fans :top
Stephen's an extremely busy man, too, but he makes time for us......
As for suggesting this to the powers that be on SR.com, I've tried that, but suggestions seem to be falling on deaf ears. Maybe that's exactly what Mick wants.......

Yes, Lin....I know just what you mean! I look into chat quite often & there's usually no one there or it's people I've never heard of before. Honestly, the only reason I even bother to go onto the SR site is to see if there's any news of a U.S. tour......and of course, the occasional post (comment?) to Mick....

Thanks everyone. This is a very interesting discussion. Lin, I couldn't have put it better myself. You have described my thoughts and feelings almost perfect.

I'm truly not interested in Mick's personal life. Most of us aren't. However, you can't help that the lines do get blurred from time to time. But I am interested in the musical journey of Mick and the band. We don't have that now.

I too miss the old website, comments, laughs and everyone's Simply Red experiences. It did keep us all together and one big family. Yes, families do argue every now and then and so did we. and yes, we are still trying to bring them all back together.

We love the music and our loyalty is about the only gift we can give back to the band when we have recieved the gift of Simply Red music and live performances.

As my Mum sometimes reflects on life and says, "it just isn't like it used to be".

Long live Simply Red and us fans. :D :D

Let's put it this way Sasred, I always like reading someone who enjoys writing (and does it competently!). I think this apply to you. :top:

Take it from a consumed bookworm :D

*laughs* I just have the gift of gab. Ask anyone who's ever met me or any of my relatives. 8)

To all who have been commenting on the official site vs. ours--I'm glad you feel you have a home here, I think Michi's done an awesome job with this, bringing the family together again...but it isn't quite the same. Let us know what we can do to bring a little more life here and recapture some of that magic. If it can be done, between Michi and I, we'll get it done.

Including having a word with our esteemed musicians at the shows in a couple of weeks to see if they might not stop in to say hello on occasion. If I can possibly meet up with them, that is. :D

I hope so, too, Diana, though of course there's no guarantee. I miss those topics too. As you might figure. *tugs at collar, slight grimace* Answered our questions...and even started joining in the teasing at the end...I'll never forget Steve's comment about Liz's shoe fetish...
Would be nice, too, now that I'm actually playing bass, to be able to ask him some more intelligent questions about it...

...ah well. It was great while it lasted, I'm glad Ian, Dave, Steve, Chris, and even Kevin (in chat) gave of their time. Maybe I can convince them to come back. *shrugs* And get Bladesman back in here for a turn or two.

10 more days. I'm on the plane a week from tomorrow. And I'm not even excited yet. How warped am I?

Please continue with whatever discussions this thread wandered off to... :D
