did any members of abba smoke?
i wonder if any of them ever smoked cigarettes ,and wether any still do?

Re: did any members of abba smoke?

TK - 22.12.2010, 23:45

Like most of the adult population back then, all four members of ABBA smoked in the 1970s and early 1980s. Pretty sure that both Agnetha and Frida have given up in the meantime (at least it is said on Frida's DVD that she doesn't smoke). Don't know about Benny and Bjorn but I'd be willing to guess that they too are "smoke free" these days.

Re: did any members of abba smoke?

ellielovesabba - 23.12.2010, 00:26

Bjorn said he only ever smoked at parties, I know Frida quit in the mid eighties, but It wouldn't suprised if benny or Bjorn still smoked. Vile habit...

Geordiegirl - 23.12.2010, 07:45

I can, rather vaguely, remember seeing a TV interview/performance with Frida in the 80's in Fance I think where Frida was talking about her life at the time & she said that she had given up smoking. I am pretty sure she was promoting Something's Going On at the time. Gill

I've seen pics with Agnetha, Frida and Benny holding cigarettes (packs of cigarettes, lighters). Agnetha has given up smoking long time ago. There's a pic of her wearing a "non-smoking generation" t-shirt. I believe her toncils gave her a hard time quite often during the first years with Abba and that's maybe one of the reasons she quit. Don't know if Frida quit. There are fairly recent pictures with Benny and a cigarette in his hand, so I guess he still smokes. I've never seen a picture of Björn with a cigarette.

There were some critics crucifying Agnetha back then cause she was in the campaign for A Non Smoking Generation and a week later she was in a café smoking with boyfriend Dick...

Björn did smoke, but I think indeed occasionnally.

Re: did any members of abba smoke?

It is a horrid habit Ellie, but it's an addiction and very hard to beat. And I should know. Social situations are a trigger for many.

I never understand how a singer could smoke! Unless you want that gravelly sound like Marianne Faithful or something and I believe she just had/has a naturally husky voice.

My impression is that Agnetha found it hard to give up but that's just supposition.

It's true that I have never seen Bjorn with a cigarette on the go! I always smile to myself when I see that pic of Agnetha and Frida where she's holding the Marlboro packet open and looking at Agnetha to see if she'll succumb- I bet she did!

There's a picture of Bjorn smoking inside the sleeve of Ted Gärdestad's second album. That's the only one I've ever seen.

I am so glad I never started smoking! I'd rather spend my money on ABBA! I didn't know Bjorn had smoked. He's the only one I haven't seen with a ciggie in his hand. He probably smoked one or two in his whole lifetime. The most recent photo I have of Frida with a ciggie is from 1973! Agnetha smoked more than Frida I think and into the '80s. I bet Benny still smokes!!! Rich.

Re: did any members of abba smoke?

Pabs - 23.12.2010, 20:08

I heard a radio interview with Bjorn recorded around the time of CHESS, and he says "Do you mind if I smoke?", and then he does. I think you can even hear him blowing out a huge puff at one point. So he certainly did smoke. Maybe just at parties and during radio interviews, then, and sometimes also in parks, when fishing... etc, etc, etc...

I am so glad - for you. Unfortunately, I spend on both.

Quote: I didn't know Bjorn had smoked. He's the only one I haven't seen with a ciggie in his hand.

Which doesn't mean he did not. I have this interview disk and illustrated booklet by Nina Rasmussen, and there is this interview with Bjorn from the eighties (I think) and he asked the presenter if it was allowed to smoke in there or it would be considered intolerable. He was allowed to.

EDIT: Pablo,

Agnetha was a heavy smoker. Funny the story in which she supported the anti-smoking campaign and then she was spotted smoking outside. I love that story.

Benny was often photographed with a ciggy in his mouth and there was also a picture of him going through Frida's purse, probably looking for a lighter.
I've noticed another picture - I think it had been taken in Holland, after the photo-session with a clown. Agnetha, Bjorn and Frida were chatting casually with other people, so I suppose it had been taken after the session was over, but Benny turned his back, a bit bent forward, typical when a person lights one. I can't imagine he quit.

Re: did any members of abba smoke?

abbarich - 23.12.2010, 21:02

I think Bjorn must be the most discreet smoker there ever was! All this time I thought he was the only non-smoker in ABBA. I have thousands of casual offstage ABBA photos with the other three smoking. Very clever man is Bjorn, to have kept that one particular vice from the camera! Rich.

Re: did any members of abba smoke?

drimnagh - 23.12.2010, 21:10

'Kiss a smoker, kiss an ashtray', as the saying goes. I know which I prefer! Thankfully, I've never been accused of smelling like a chain smoking heffer..

I'd kiss Agnetha or Frida whether they were a smoker or not. The 'boys' can settle for a handshake.

Re: did any members of abba smoke?

dizzymoe33 - 23.12.2010, 23:06

They all had been smoking until the 80's and Agnetha, Frida and Bjorn don't smoke....Benny doesn't smoke but a friend who has met Benny personally says he uses Snus.

Re: did any members of abba smoke?

ellielovesabba - 23.12.2010, 23:09

Snus.... is that slang for a drug

Re: did any members of abba smoke?

AYE! Exactly.

I'm as careful as Bjorn is, regarding photos. I even ask people to wait until I've finished a cigarette before they take snaps of me. Otherwise, I hide my cigarette if a pic of me is taken when I'm having one. Result? There's not a single picture of me anywhere holding a cigarette.

If I can avoid having any pictures of me with a cigarette in hand, then so can Bjorn - or anybody else, really. I don't just don't like the "look" of someone having a ciggie in a photo. Neither does Bjorn, obviously.

I feel differently. On the contrary, I think it can look great- depending on the smoker, how they smoke/hold the cigarette- many factors. It's a great 'look'- rebellious and I like the two fingers to society/their own health it imparts. The only thing I do draw the line at is smoking in close proximity to children/others who aren't so keen.

There's absolutely no question/debate about smoking..it's stupid, smelly, ugly and it kills you. But it's also pleasureable and addictive so some people do, some don't. It's personal choice. That's the bottom line.

Anyone got a light? Frida? Agnetha? Spark me up! :rotfl2:

Well being a smoker herself Agnetha clearly saw how important it was for others (young people) not to start. At least she knew what she was talking about.
The fact that she herself had not given up completely is not that big a deal.

Re: did any members of abba smoke?

Seanie(: - 18.09.2011, 14:19

As I said in the other thread, I hate the thought of Abba smoking. I knew it was cool back then, but I find it so degrading on a person. Never Judge A Book By Its Cover, but I don't.

Thankfully my parents gave up smoking before I was born. Im with my gran alot, and I have to my clothes all the time. Its a horrible smell. Saying that, I do love the smoke smell when its puffed out, but not when it gets on clothes and I smell terrible.

Re: Abba smoking, there is a pic of Bjorn I have seen of him smoking. Of course he does. Benny is the only one I think still smokes, thats why his voice is so husky. Frida gave up back in the late 80s and it shows, her voice isnt husky like Deirdre Barlow from Corrie (UK people know what I'm on about.)

That scene of them all smoking in 78 is horrible. Even back then, didnt they
have a clue that it could be harming their children and others. At least she gave up during her pregnancy, but why did she start again? She said dhe felt more beautiful smoking, then why do it for longer afterwards?

Re: did any members of abba smoke?

I Let The Music Speak - 18.09.2011, 14:45

I have to agree, Sean.

It's one thing smoking at all, but it's another to be seen, photographed and filmed doing it in public. I must admit, I tend to judge people on whether they smoke, and I know I shouldn't.

I'd like to think that Agnetha only did so in stressful situations. It might have had a calming effect on her. I doubt she would have smoked much, and certainly not in front of her children. I'd always known Benny and Frida smoked, but Agnetha and Bjorn also doing so was a bit of a shock. I thought I'd read that Agnetha had had her tonsils out in the early days of ABBA and had given up then. Until I saw these threads I didn't know Bjorn had smoked at all.

Kate Bush used to smoke, that was quite well known, but she was never photographed or filmed doing so (to my knowledge). It just looks very undignified to be seen smoking, and she probably realised that. I think she also gave up at some point.

Re: did any members of abba smoke?

Seanie(: - 18.09.2011, 14:57

I just dont get it why people take it up these days. Back then in the 50s/60s when the Abba members started smoking, you could be forgiven. It was marketed as good for you. I even remember seeing vintage poster saying it made you skinny, healthier and even smarter?

But now, theres no excuse. Its like "I dont care I'm giving myself cancer, or that I'm spending €8 a week (or more." so Abba and all the members here from that era can be excused. But not now

Re: did any members of abba smoke?

drimnagh - 18.09.2011, 15:23

I see, regularly, what smoking can do to a person and it's not nice, cool or clever- in fact, it's stupid and ugly. Not to mention tragic and heartbreaking to witness. I have no time for anyone who defends it. But nicotine is a strong, very addictive substance and a hard habit to kick. But kick it, they should. I'm glad if all of ABBA did eventually. It's a foul, dirty habit and unattractive to the max- even to an ex-smoker.

Nowadays smoking isn't popular thing anymore. In 60-70's smoking was so normal (I have heard), people smokes in their homes, offices, restaurants, everywhere. It wasn't forbidden, shameless thing. Today when someones smokes it's almost crime.

Its our choice, our bodies, our lungs and even if I wouldnt advocate anyone starting to smoke I dont think anyone has the right to make such discrmanatory statements on a forum like this. Now, please give it a break, folks. Some of those comments almost sound as if smokers are some sort of outcasts theirs behaviour has to be morally damned.

This of course is absolute nonsense. It's a drug that not only endangers your health but also causes addiction, as alcohol and other drugs are. I'm happy that I got rid of it a couple of years ago, but I can't remember that I felt like a criminal while still doing it.

Ignoring all of the comments degrading or having a go at smokers, I think it was absolutely acceptable for the members of ABBA to smoke. Back in the 60's, 70's and 80's, you were an outcast if you didn't smoke, therefore I find it alright.
As for our beloveds smoking nowdays, I'm nearly certain that Benny still does, but I'm not sure about the others. I wouldn't be overly surprised if they all still had the occasional cigarette, or even if they smoked reguarly. Once you are a smoker, you pretty much always are. It is a diffcult habit to give up, and the majority of the time an ex-smoker will start smoking again sometime in their life.
In conclusion, I say don't judge. We need to remember that these four people we idolise are just that, people. If they chose to smoke or still do smoke then it's fine by me!

Huh? I haven't, and I'm your age. I wouldn't even dare try one.

Whoever has the intention to try - don't.

It was the most idiotic thing I've done in my life and I wish I hadn't.

Now I can't get rid of it. :P

Of course, I too detest bitchy comments about smokers. It is our own tragedy, after all but we enjoy it, unfortunately.
