Mamma Mia! coming to Southern California
Mamma Mia! is coming to SoCal! I checked the website for the Orange County Performing Arts Center (Costa Mesa), and it is scheduled for 16 performances between Aug 7 - 19. Ticket prices range from $23 - $73, depending on day of the week you go and where you sit.

Hi Lammer. where in Costa Mesa and how big is it and how new is it. I ask these questions because when I get back to Ca sometime in 08 I will be trying to get eather Arrival or Waterloo to play that venue.

Hi Ross,
I just heard about it on the radio yesterday morning. It is playing at the Orange County Performing Arts Center (ocpac.org). I checked the website and found the details, the dates and prices I gave above. I don't really keep up with what's playing where, etc., however, yesterday was the first time I heard the advertisement for it.

I don't know anything about the OCPAC, but perhaps if you check their website you can find information as to whether you can get Arrival or Waterloo to play there. Let us know if something comes of that, too, please.

:)

I checked the website again just now. They are also having a free Mamma Mia dance party during the afternoon of Aug 12. That sounds like the closest thing to an ABBAday we'll have here!

One more update: In June 2008 they are having ABBA: The Tribute... not sure what exactly that is...

Hmm...I might go. To both the show and dance party. Even though I've already seen the show just only four days ago. Sounds like it would be a lot of fun.

Thanks for your replies, and in a few days Mamma Mia will begin its run here!

Kristine, did you get tickets?

Any other Southern Californians (or anyone else) planning on going?

I do have tickets and will see the show (for my second time; first time was five years ago  )!

:)

Hi,

Last Wednesday I saw Mamma Mia! and this afternoon was the Mamma Mia! Dance Party.

The production was really good. I saw it with my mother, sister, and a friend. I didn't think their Dancing Queen was as good as when I'd seen it before; the Lay All Your Love on Me, Does Your Mother Know, and Take a Chance on Me were especially good. We had a lot of fun. The theater was packed, and the music was LOUD!

The Dance Party was a huge disappointment. It was advertised as such:

The second dance party will be all about ABBA on the Community Plaza immediately following the 1 p.m. matinee of the hit musical Mamma Mia! A guest DJ will be spinning your favorite ABBA hits and more between the matinee and 6:30 p.m. performance.

See how it says and more. The "and more" was the non-ABBA music that was played. An ABBA song came every third or fourth song, and of course, it was just the most well-known songs. I could list what the DJ played-- that's how few songs there were!
Let's see:
Does Your Mother Know
Dancing Queen
Mamma Mia
Chiquitita (the first half)
Take a Chance on Me (most of it)
Dancing Queen (again)
Voulez-Vous
Gimme Gimme Gimme
Money Money Money
Waterloo
Super Trouper

Ooh, 11 ABBA songs in a little under 2 hours, and I didn't even have to write the list down. "Cast members" were to appear, too: Two women from the "ensemble" came and did Dancing Queen with the crowd, then left. But, then again, it was the most ABBA songs I'd ever heard played in public.

And, here I came dressed in blue and yellow (Swedish flag colors), big sunglasses, and blue eyeshadow (HAD to do the blue eyeshadow!). Ah, well. My boys, my friend, and I had fun in spite of it all. (Sorry, Maxi, no pictures worth posting.)

:)

Just came back from Costa Mesa...

I had a WONDERFUL time! Great show. Great production. Would see it again if I could.

This is the very first time I've ever seen the WHOLE CROWD up on their feet dancing and singing along for the "encore"/last three songs. Throughout the show, there was so much great feedback from the audience...constant laughter and genuine engagement with the characters and story. I love when the crowd carries so much energy. It creates a great experience.

And that's exactly what tonight was...a GREAT experience.

Kristine, glad you had a great time!

Ross, I'm sure you can find the info you want, or at least the telephone numbers you need, at www.ocpac.org. Click on "About the Artscenter" along the top...

Lammer!!! Happy that you got to see the show!!!

Sorry the dance afterwards was lame. But, at least there was one! In Vegas, there are no after parties.....

Still, it sounds like you had a good time and are overall happy you attended
:)

I will see it again soon, I hope, somewhere....I like the show very much.

Off to see Mama Mia for the third time in Melbourne, Florida October 26. I think I like it more every time I see it. I am sure you had a great time. Mama Mia is like an ABBA gift with a good show included! Both times I saw it the crowd was very into it, and active. Lots of standing, singing, and dancing. The finale was great surprise the first time, I did not know about it all!
