    Wong's "Battering Ram" track reviews
As a musician myself (or at least someone who likes to think he is) I know how feedback is important - so here's mine, track by track!

    Battering Ram

Like every first track by Iron Savior, this opens the album well. The first solo section re-introduces the band again after two years, in impressive Unification style. The rest of the song is nicely upbeat, has a good mix of speeds, with the slow-downs just before the very catchy chorus. The lyric "Bang like a battering ram" wouldn't have worked with anyone but Piet!

Originally I thought it was a "heavy metal" song, one about the sound of IS's music, but looking at more of the lyrics it seems that it might be about the Thunderbird that took off at the end of Condition Red. That's just conjecture, though.

    Stand Against the King

I instantly loved this track when I first heard it on the sample MP3s. I find the intro a little strange, as if the song changes its mind about what rhythm it's in near the start, but after a couple of listens I grew used to that. It shows that IS can write well both in simple and compound time. Of all the tracks on the album, I think that this is the one that I like best.

Also, on the sample MP3, the vaccuum-cleaning was comedy gold!

    Tyranny of Steel

A very Iron Savior name, and a very Iron Savior chorus - "Mighty Savior, giant made of steel..." I enjoy this song a lot, it has a lot of power behind it (as is characteristic of the band). One thing I have about it, though, is the lyric "Beyond the abyss" that ends the song... I don't know what it is about it, but it seems a little too cliched to me. For the rest of it, though - excellent.

    Time Will Tell

I've not got a lot of negative points about this album, have I? And this song is no exception... it was the first one that I heard, from the sample at Noise Records. The lyrics are once again very Piet Sielck (blaze, burning, fire!) and fit the mood of the song perfectly.

The shout of "But we will fight" in the middle isn't one of my favourite parts of the album... it's certainly emphatic, but it seems to me to be almost too aggressive.

    Wings of Deliverance

A slow down after the first four tracks, I feel this sounds like the title theme of an Anime series! Maybe that's just me... I'm not a great fan of the lyrics of this one, but the melodic guitar work more than makes up for it.

    Break the Curse

This strikes me as a very "different" song on the album, with a very worthwhile message - to get up and live life. As Yenz said on the sample, it'll be a good one live!

    Riding Free

Seemingly inspired by Gamma Ray's "Eagle", this is again one of my favourites from the album. It would also be a rather good anthem for an internet sub-culture that I'm a part of... that aside, the observation of the holy war taking place in the world today is insightful - including a mention of the twin towers falling, if I'm not mistaken - and I agree with the opinions expressed in it (the lyrics, indeed, are very similar to one of my own songs!)

My only reservation about this song is the intro and ending - compared to the rest, to my ears they seem rather too manic to fit the rest of it.

    Starchaser

Ah, the staple of every Iron Savior album - the song with this rhythm! The theme of escaping the world seem to have continued from the previous song, but this time expressed in a different way. A great chorus, and the "Woah-oh!" shout leading in to the solo is perfect! The solo itself seems to end a little suddenly, giving way to the lower section (great harmonies here once again).

    Machine World

It took me a couple of listens to like this song as much as I do now, because there's a lot to take in. It seems to ask the listener questions as to what life is really about - the best way to get the listener involved in a song. It also reminds me a little of "Alpha and Omega" by Stratovarius, with the "I am..." lyrics. There's also a part that is rather reminiscent of something from Iron Maiden's album "Brave New World", at the end of the solo.

This has all the rhythm changes and different sections an "epic" track should have, and certainly justifies its length. Actually, it isn't as long as I was expecting it to be. But like "Back into the Light" before it, this song really makes me feel for the character in the song - in this case, the computer that can't find the meaning of its existence.

    Heavy Metal Powered Man

In attitude, this bears a lot of resemblance to Kai Hansen's "Heavy Metal Universe". However, lyrically I prefer this song - HMU I always found too much as if it was "worshipping" metal, but this gives the message that you don't need to conform to any image to enjoy this music - and it even mentions and denounces the MTV generation of bands who are taking away what metal really is. A good message!

    The Call

I have to start by saying that I don't really agree with the message of this song, "To metal we are sworn". I think that it makes it sound too much like a religion, and seemingly goes against what was said in the previous song. The pauses to change the rhythm sound rather awkward to me, and there are a lot of places where Piet seems to be more shouting than signing.

I don't want it all to be negative, though - the parts where the melody comes back in are enjoyable, the instrumental section is good - and a great shout from Piet ends the album!

I wasn't as taken with The Call as the rest of the album, but it's certainly a worthwhile addition. Keep writing, Yenz!

"Beyond the abyss!" ...i LOVE that part, something about the way he sings it is really HEAVY and "BUT WE WILL FIGHT!" i love that too, you just want to raise your fists and shout along with it :o
I dont have "The Call", is it a bonus track???? HM Powered Man is the last song on my CD. I hate when i miss out on a song... that reminds me, does anyone have an MP3 they could send me of Iron Savior covering Electric Eye? I really want to hear that.

That's right, The Call's only on the limited edition.

Don't take anything I've said above the wrong way, it's all just personal opinion - overall, it's certainly the best thing that the band have produced so far, and a contender for the best metal CD I've ever bought.

Wong, your review is really nice! It's very truthful and analytical - I'm sure Saviors (if they read this) will appreciate it as well! I haven't heard non-downloadable tracks, and this gives me some idea of them - and I can't wait to get it!! :D
Your comments on Stand Against the King specially fit perfectly with mine :) Ofcourse, I only have the 'spoiling' version lol, and I love it!! :D
