why do you sing in english?
We all grew up listening to American/English rock/metal, so I guess we see ourselves as a part of a tradition/culture which doesn't sound cool in other languages. I am from Denmark myself, and to me it was always clear, that if I wanted to give Japanese or American people with a similar musical taste/lifestyle the chance to appreciate what I'm doing, going for Danish lyrics would be a pretty bad decision.

True, it would be said if I couldn't understand IS.

Bands like Red Wine, I wanted to hear a lot of, but I heard they sing in Spanish so I haven't even tried them.

English is universal :D But I guess it would be fun to have a song or two in German ;)

Nightwish has a Finnish song on their new album and even though I don't get it, I love it! :D

    Yenz, about languages...
I understand why you sing in English, no other question about it. But I have a little curiosity... Once I talked to a musician about how a certain language seems to fit more to a kind of music instead of another. Let me try to explain: Italian language seems to fit to a very melodic kind of music, German seems to be born more for a Rammstein style etc. He told me that it depends a lot on the rhythm the language has, the division in syllables, where the accent usually falls and so on. I do not know much about composing a song, but it sounds like something reasonable... what do you think about it?
Well, I hope it was clear what I meant. This evening I'm so tired that it seems English words don't wanna come out of my brain right now... at least not in the right order!!

    ABOUT NON-ENGLISH METAL
The thing here is, as much as we love heavy metal, (Un)fortunately it doesn't have massive amount of fans, as do other music generes.
Metal is not very common, but english language is, because the massive influence of movies, TV, music, books and commercial power USA has. So, if we use a language we can all understand, music becomes universal, and that's how HM has been able to survive.

The number of fans is cut to less than 10% if your message is not totally transmitted. (That's why I'm so concerned about translations; I want to become Iron Savior's Official Spanish Translator. )

Nevertheless, many bands sing in their native tongue. I know at least
15 bands that sing in German, other 15 in Spanish (lotta Latin metal, hail to that!!! ) and a few in other languages.

And I do not agree with that about Metal not sounding cool if is not in english. I've heard excellent non-english metal. I do not speak (not even a single word) Bulgarian, and "Ahat", a band from there, is way cool.

"La Canción del Pirata" (Pirate's Song) of Tierra Santa is another example. Perhaps music is not that great in this one, but the lyrics... Man!!!
That is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my life, in or outside metal.

    Another note about English composition:

English language has an INCREDIBLE amount of one and two syllable words, (that is, at least, compared to Spanish) so that makes it very flexible.
Therefore, lyrics can tell much more in less verses, and are easier to match with music (because you can "time them?", I'm not sure if I'm making myself clear, or even if that's how it should be said, I apologize)

I think I get what you mean. It's easier to accent some parts of a word and not in another because in English, you've got the choice of using either longer or shorter words :O

I don't know about other languages but English has a lot of modern terms like 'cybernetic' which isn't a common one. We have nothing of that sort in Nepali, anyway. So IS would NEED English lol :D

    Example
Yes. I agree, the accenture is very important when dealing with long words.

I'm not so good explaining myself, so I thought of an example to show this better.

    Let's use the word "friend".
This word has six letters, but still it is a one syllable word. It can be used in a song wherever you find space enough to place one syllable.

Spanish for friend is "amigo", but even though it has only 5 letters, it is a three syllable word! (a - mi - go) and the accenture can only be placed in the center syllable, and no other. (a - MI - go) This complicates things for using it in a song: you must make sure you are respecting this.

So, that makes saying "friend" two times faster than "amigo", plus the accenture, that must match a given time in the music.

When you are dealing with several hundreds of words, trust me, it really makes an enormous difference.

Yep, I see very well what you mean. Your explanations is good.

For example, in "Time will Tell", there's a part that goes:

"The machinery is marching"... which has 8 syllables. I can get away with "The machinery's marching", which removed one syllable, without destroying the tune (and streching marchching to "ma-arching").

So yes, English is more flexible in that sense. Besides, you get to accent at different places in some words.

They say in two words - English language is musical language:)

Do not say that. There are some good german metal/punkrock bands too. And they do sound cool.
    For example Rammstein.
They are sounding good on german.

Yeah, Id have to agree with you there, and I would even go so far as to say that Rammstein loses something when they attempt to sing in English. They did a rendition of the Depeche Mode song "Stripped," and while it was the best-sounding Depeche Mode remake ive heard from another band (theres an entire cd for them called, "For the Masses), it still wasnt as cool as when they sing in German.

Yep, Rammstein *Stripped* version is not bad, but... don't know... something's missing... :? Though I love Till's English, it sounds hard and very *German*!

I do not like Rammstein, but there are several Bands in Germany doing very good Medieval-Metal. And there are other bands in other countries expanding that idea. Just listen to "Otyg" (swedish).
So I think, its at least only a question of the norm. And of a skilled writer, which IS has. So why not try out with one song or two? Worst thing to be happening would be comments like "skip that for the next album". Interesting it would be anyway.
